Six cochlear implant recipients with hearing aids in the opposite ear were studied to survey binaural advantage. They were examined in separate tests by using a hearing aid alone, cochlear implant alone, and by using both devices (bimodal condition). Test items used were the Japanese monosyllable word list 67--S and Japanese HINT. Statistically significantly results were obtained in the bimodal condition, three out of six subjects were successful in the monosyllable word test and all successful in the Japanese HINT. We conclude that all subjects enjoyed binaural advantage in speech perception in bimodal condition with no conflict at the recognition level; even when different sounds from cochlear implant and contralateral hearing aid were received. The plasticity of the brain is thought to be of importance in the bimodal condition.

The polymerase gamma (POLG) gene mutation is associated with mitochondria and metabolism disorders, resulting in heterogeneous responses to immunological activation and posing challenges for mitochondrial disease therapy. Optical metabolic imaging captures the autofluorescent signal of two coenzymes, NADH and FAD, and offers a label-free approach to detect cellular metabolic phenotypes, track mitochondria morphology, and quantify metabolic heterogeneity. In this study, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) of NAD(P)H and FAD revealed that POLG mutator macrophages exhibit a decreased NAD(P)H lifetime, and optical redox ratio compared to the wild-type macrophages, indicating an increased dependence on glycolysis.

Bacterial prostatitis (BP) is a common prostatic infection characterized by pain and urinary symptoms, often with negative bacterial cultures from prostatic secretions. It affects young and older men bimodally and impacts quality of life (QoL) significantly. : Treatment typically involves antibiotics, but a multimodal approach with additional nutraceuticals may enhance outcomes.

Background: Liver transplantation has improved survival rates in pediatric patients with end-stage liver failure. However, post-liver transplant infection remains a threat to patient recovery. This study reported the frequency and patterns of infections after liver transplantation and identified factors related to the accuracy of fever source investigation.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world, is usually not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease, when patients might have already missed the best treatment period. Therefore, more effective prediction methods based on artificial intelligence (AI) are needed to assist physicians in timely diagnosis.
New Methods: An explainable deep learning-based early Parkinson's disease diagnostic model, Parkinson's Integrative Diagnostic Gated Network (PIDGN), was designed by fusing Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) and brain sMRI data.

This study investigates the morphology and thermo-mechanical properties of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes for potential use in high-temperature borehole thermal energy storage systems. Particular attention is given to a novel type of PEX pipe produced through photoinitiated cross-linking (PEX-e). Two formulations, PEX-e1 and PEX-e2, were analyzed and compared to peroxide-cross-linked polyethylene (PEX-a) and non-cross-linked bimodal polyethylene (PE100) pipes.
