The goal of these studies was to analyze the cytotoxicity of both the conventional and atypical antipsychotic drugs in relation to their effects on glucose metabolism. The drugs were evaluated for their effects on the viability of PC12 cells, which are an established model of neuronal cells in culture. In general, the conventional drugs, such as chlorpromazine, fluphenazine and pimozide, were more toxic than the atypical drugs, including clozapine, quetiapine and risperidone. Olanzapine was unique in that it stimulated cell proliferation in this system. There was a good correlation between the cytotoxicity of a drug and its ability to block glucose transport, although there were some exceptions to this trend. Conventional antipsychotics also affected the expression of glucose transporter proteins in whole cell extracts and at the cell surface. Overall, the data support the notion that many of the antipsychotic drugs associated with the development of movement disorders in patients are cytotoxic for cultured cells.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a complex, chronic mental disorder characterized by positive symptoms (such as delusions and hallucinations), negative symptoms (including anhedonia, alogia, avolition, and social withdrawal), and cognitive deficits (affecting attention, processing speed, verbal and visuospatial learning, problem-solving, working memory, and mental flexibility). Extensive animal and clinical studies have emphasized the NMDAR hypofunction hypothesis of SZ. Glycine plays a crucial role as an agonist of NMDAR, enhancing the receptor's affinity for glutamate and supporting normal synaptic function and plasticity, that is, signal transmission between neurons.

Background: Many variables may affect approaches of psychiatrists to methamphetamine-associated psychotic disorder (MAP) treatment. This study was aimed to reach adult psychiatrists actively practicing in Turkey through an internet-based survey and to determine their practices and attitudes to MAP treatment.
Methods: In this internet-based study, participants were divided into three groups based on their answers: Those who do not follow-up any MAP patient were group 1 (n = 78), partially involved in the treatment process of at least one patient diagnosed with MAP were group 2 (n = 128), completely involved in the treatment process of at least one patient diagnosed with MAP were group 3 (n = 202).
