Reaction of TpR,MeCo(I) dinitrogen complexes (R = iPr, tBu) with trimethylsilyl azide yields structurally characterized compounds that imply the formation of reactive intermediates of the type TpR,MeCo=NSiMe3. These cobalt imido species apparently abstract hydrogen from the 3-substituent of the Tp-ligand, leading to the formation of amido complexes accompanied by either Co-C bond formation (R = tBu) or C-C bond formation (R = iPr).

Understanding the structure of a functional catalyst is crucial to disclosing the complexity of heterogeneous processes and improving their efficiency. Herein, coprecipitated cobalt-ceria (CoCeO) oxides doped with Ir (IrCoCeO) were synthesized and used to assess the performances of metal/oxide interfaces in the NH·HO decomposition performed in aqueous NaOH. Kinetic experiments in batch showed that CoO is the active phase of CoCeO and that the copresence of Ir and Co (IrCoCeO) enhanced H productivity.

Treatment of [Co(N)(PNP)] (PNP = anion of 2,5-bis(di--butylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole) with one equivalent of an aryl azide generates the four-coordinate imido complexes [Co(NAr)(PNP)] (Ar = mesityl, phenyl, or 4-Bu-phenyl). X-ray crystallographic analysis of the compounds shows an unusual square-planar geometry about cobalt with nearly linear imido units. In the presence of the hydrogen atom donor, TEMPOH, [Co(NPh)(PNP)] undergoes addition of the H atom to the imido nitrogen to generate the corresponding amido complex, [Co(NHPh)(PNP)], whose structure and composition were verified by independent synthesis.

Synthesis and Reactivity of a Cobalt-Supported Singlet Nitrene.

The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a series of cobalt terminal imido complexes supported by an -anchored tripodal tris(carbene) chelate is described, including a Co-supported singlet nitrene. Reaction of the Co precursor [(TIMMN)Co](PF) (TIMMN = -[2-(3-mesityl-idazolin-2-ylidene)-ethyl]amie) with -methoxyphenyl azide yields a Co imide [(TIMMN)Co(NAnisole)](PF) (). Treatment of with 1 equiv of [FeCp](PF) at -35 °C affords a formal Co imido complex [(TIMMN)Co(NAnisole)](PF) (), which features a bent Co-N(imido)-C(Anisole) linkage.

Metal-bound nitrene species are the crucial intermediate in catalytic nitrene transfer reactions exhibited by engineered enzymes and molecular catalysts. The electronic structure of such species and its correlation with nitrene transfer reactivity have not been fully understood yet. This work presents an in-depth electronic structure analysis and nitrene transfer reactivity of two prototypical metal-nitrene species derived from Co(TPP) and Fe(TPP) (TPP = -tetraphenylporphyrin) complexes and tosyl azide nitrene precursor.

The synthesis of a piano-stool ruthenium hydride, [(η-CMe)Ru(PmIm)H] (PmIm = (-(1,3,5-trimethylphenyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)ethan-1-imine), for the dual purpose of catalytic dihydrogen activation and subsequent hydrogen atom transfer for the formation of weak chemical bonds is described. The introduction of a neutral, potentially redox-active PmIm supporting ligand was designed to eliminate the possibility of deleterious C(sp)-H reductive coupling and elimination that has been identified as a deactivation pathway with related rhodium and iridium catalysts. Treatment of [(η-CMe)RuCl] with one equivalent PmIm ligand in the presence of zinc and sodium methoxide resulted in the isolation of the diruthenium complex, [(η-CMe)Ru(PmIm)], arising from the C-C bond formation between two PmIm chelates.
