Comparison of waterless hand antisepsis agents at short application times: raising the flag of concern.

Objective: Although alcohol-based hand rinses and gels have recommended application times of 30 to 60 seconds, healthcare workers usually take much less time for hand hygiene. We compared the efficacies of four alcohol-based hand rubs produced in Europe (hand rinses A, B, and C and one gel formulation) with the efficacy of the European Norm 1500 (EN 1500) reference waterless hand antisepsis agent (60% 2-propanol) at short application times.

Design: Comparative crossover study.

Setting: Infection Control Program laboratory of a large tertiary-care teaching hospital.

Participants: Twelve healthy volunteers.

Intervention: Measurement of residual bacterial counts and log reduction factors following inoculation of fingertips with Staphylococcus aurens American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) 6538, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, and a clinical isolate of Enterococcus faecalis.

Results: All hand rinses satisfied EN 1500 standards following a single application for 15 and 30 seconds, but reduction factors for the gel formulation were significantly lower for all tested organisms (all P < .025).

Conclusions: Under stringent conditions similar to clinical practice, all three hand rinses proved to be more efficacious than the marketed alcohol-based gel in reducing bacterial counts on hands. Further studies are necessary to determine the in vivo efficacy of alcohol-based gels and whether they are as efficacious as alcohol-based rinses in reducing the transmission of nosocomial infections.

Objective: Hand washing is considered an important public health intervention to reduce the burden of communicable diseases such as gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections. Washbasins in public restrooms are often only equipped with cold water and it can be observed that people only rinse their hands briefly after using the toilet instead of washing them properly with soap. As there are no recommendations on the optimal water temperature for efficacy, we measured the efficacy of simple hand rinsing with cold (4°C) and warm (40°C) water for 10 and 20 seconds compared to the European Norm EN 1499 reference hand wash.

Monitoring real-time health conditions is a rinsing demand in a pandemic prone era. Wearable Point-of-Care (POC) devices with paper and fabric-based sensors are emerging as simple, low-cost, portable, and disposable analytical tools for development of green POC devices (GPOCDs). Capabilities of passive fluid transportation, compatibility with biochemical analytes, disposability and high degree of tunability using vivid device fabrication strategies enables development of highly sensitive and economically feasible POC sensors in particularly post COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

is a diverse genus of evergreen and deciduous species grown in gardens worldwide for their attractive flowers and foliage. In summer 2023, nine of 12 potted 'Nova Zembla' plants purchased from a wholesale nursery in Ohio exhibited wilting, leaf and stem discoloration, and severely darkened and softened roots, which eventually progressed into dieback and plant death. Roots tested positive with a Phytophthora Immunostrip® (Agdia, Inc.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the infection prevention behaviors among kidney transplant recipients, focusing on the sociodemographic and self-management factors that influence these behaviors.
  • The research involved 148 patients, revealing that only 51% practiced proper hand hygiene, and found age and marital status affected behaviors like vaccination and food safety.
  • Overall, the findings indicate incomplete adherence to infection prevention practices, highlighting the need for targeted education and interventions to improve these behaviors in kidney transplant recipients.
