The transition from fossil fuels dependency to embracing renewable alternatives is pivotal for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, with biorefineries playing a central role at the forefront of this transition. As a sustainable alternative, lignocellulosic feedstocks hold great promise for biofuels and biochemicals production. However, the effective utilization of complex sugars, such as xylose, remains a significant hurdle.

Enhancing complex bioprocess learning through simulation technology and hybrid teaching: A case study in university education.

Biochem Mol Biol Educ

November 2024

Departamento de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas y Farmacéuticas, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

The utilization of computer simulators in university education is progressively being embraced to offer students a practical exposure to industrial bioprocesses. Bioreactor computer simulators hold various advantages over conventional laboratory experiments, such as cost-effectiveness and enhanced safety. The research objective is to assess the effectiveness of integrating bioreactor computer simulators into hybrid teaching to promote active and collaborative learning experiences and evaluate their impact on student participation and understanding.

Flux-Type versus Concentration-Type Sensors in Transdermal Measurements.

Biosensors (Basel)

August 2023

Milo Sensors, Inc., Santa Barbara, CA 93101, USA.

New transdermal biosensors measure analytes that diffuse from the bloodstream through the skin, making it important to reduce the system response time and understand measurement output. While highly customized models have been created for specific sensors, a generalized model for transdermal sensor systems is lacking. Here, a simple one-dimensional diffusion model was used to characterize the measurement system and classify biosensors as either flux types or concentration types.

Embracing an interaction between the phase change material (PCM) and the droplets of a heat transfer fluid, the direct contact (DC) method suggests a cutting-edge solution for expediting the phase change rates of PCMs in thermal energy storage (TES) units. In the direct contact TES configuration, when impacting the molten PCM pool, droplets evaporate, provoking the formation of a solidified PCM area (A). Then, they reduce the created solid temperature, leading to a minimum temperature value (T).
