Members of the genus Platyamoeba are among the most common of the free-living brackish and marine amoebae; yet, to date only twelve species have been documented in the literature and only a limited number of habitats have been sampled globally. During the course of a systematic survey of salt-marsh amoebae along the east coast of the United States, a new species of Platyamoeba was discovered in sediment samples obtained from a salt marsh at Assateague Island, VA. The species can be distinguished from all other described species within the genus by the presence of a nucleus with a single parietal nucleolus and a floating form with long tapering pseudopods. Its shape varies from flabellate to spatulate as described for species of Platyamoeba and Vannella. The fine structure of the glycocalyx, however, is characteristic of Platyamoeba.

Two amoeboid organisms were obtained from water samples taken from a thermal spring, "Agua Caliente", in Northwestern Mexico. The isolates were obtained when samples were cultivated at 37 °C on non-nutrient agar coated with The initial identification of the isolates was performed morphologically using light microscopy. The samples were found to have trophozoite morphology consistent with members of the genus , a genus derived in 2007 from within the abolished polyphyletic genus .

We sequenced 18S rRNA genes from 21 vannellid amoebae (Amoebozoa; Vannellidae), including nearly all available type cultures, and performed a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis for 57 Vannellidae sequences. The results show that species of Vannella and Platyamoeba are completely mixed and do not form distinct clades. Several very closely related species pairs exist, each with a Vannella and a Platyamoeba species differing in only a few nucleotides.

Seven marine gymnamoebae were isolated from different environments of seawater, slush (pack ice meltwater), and sediment in the Ross Sea area of Antarctica. All amoebae were isolated and maintained at temperatures below 4 degrees C. Growth, rate of locomotion, and general morphology were observed at an environmentally appropriate temperature (1 degrees C) and at room temperature (approximately 25 degrees C).
