Defective metal nanostructures have attracted great attention due to the striking catalytic behavior of the defect sites. Atypical metal nanocrystals generated from attached nuclei can accommodate abundant grain boundaries (GBs) and twin boundaries (TBs). However, the understanding of their growth-mechanism and precisely synthetic control over such defective nanocrystals are still scarce.

Rh@Pt core-shell, RhPt (1:1) alloy, and Rh + Pt monometallic nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using standard polyol reduction chemistry in ethylene glycol (EG) with standard inorganic salts and polyvinylpyrrolidine (PVP(55000)) stabilizers. PVP-free colloids were also prepared but less stable than the PVP-protected NPs. Rh@Pt core-shell particles were prepared from 2.

The "combined" FP method, which combines standardless FP method with empirical calibration, was applied to the analysis of Ir-Pt, Rh-Pt, Rh-Pd-Pt and Rh-Ir-Pt disk samples and Pt-Rh thermocouple wire. Four reference materials of binary Pt-Ir system, eight Pt-Rh systems, eight reference materials of ternary Pt-Ir-Rh system and 10 Pt-Rh-Pd systems were used for calibration of "combined" FP XRF method. Results of mentioned method agreed well with certified values, or ICP OES results respectively.
