Attentional set for external information activates the right intraparietal area.

Visual attention can be allocated to a location or an object by using two different types of information: internal information and external information. The results of recent psychological studies [Bagon and Egeth, Percept. Psychophys. 55 (1994) 485] suggest that an observer's attentional set determines how these two kinds of information are used in visual tasks. In this study, we measured brain activities during two modes of visual search; one is the feature search mode, in which an attentional set for knowledge of a target item (internal information) is used, and the other is the singleton detection mode, in which an attentional set for oddness in the visual scene (external information) is used. We found extended activation in the frontal and parietal areas for both search modes. In addition, a direct comparison of brain activity during the singleton detection mode and the feature search mode revealed that the areas around the right intraparietal sulcus were more involved in the attentional set for oddness. These results suggest that the human right intraparietal cortex is related to the attentional set for external information.

An overview is given of surrogate marker evaluation, starting from the original definition of Prentice and his criteria, the estimation framework of Freedman, the meta-analytic framework, and the evaluation of surrogate endpoints from a causal inference point of view. Attention will be given, in particular, to evaluating tau-PET as a reasonably likely surrogate in Alzheimer's Disease. A meta-analytic surrogate marker evaluation approach will be followed, for a continuous surrogate and a continuous true endpoint.

Background: The prohibitive costs of drug development for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) emphasize the need for alternative in silico drug repositioning strategies. Graph learning algorithms, capable of learning intrinsic features from complex network structures, can leverage existing databases of biological interactions to improve predictions in drug efficacy. Unlabelled: In recent years, sugar alcohols have gained significant attention as organic phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage due to their comparably high thermal storage densities up to 350 J/g. The assessment of vascular accessibility in patients undergoing hemodialysis is predominantly reliant on manual inspection, a method that is associated with several limitations. In this study, we propose an alternative approach by recording the acoustic signals produced by the arteriovenous fistula (AVF) and employing deep learning techniques to analyze these sounds as an objective complement to traditional AVF evaluation methods.
