The Michael type reaction of chitosan with ethyl acrylate has been investigated. Although this reaction was quite slow in the case of chitosan, the reiteration of the reaction was an effective means for increasing the degree of substitution (DS) of ethyl ester. The N-carboxyethylchitosan ethyl ester as an intermediate was successfully substituted with various hydrophilic amines, although the simultaneous hydrolysis of the ester to carboxylic acid also occurred. Water-soluble chitosan derivatives were obtained by substitution with hydroxyalkylamines and diamines.

A Rh(III)-catalyzed sequential C-H bond addition to dienes and in situ formed aldimines was developed, allowing for the preparation of otherwise challenging to access amines with quaternary centers at the -position. A broad range of dienes were effective inputs and installed a variety of aryl and alkyl substituents at the quaternary carbon site. Aryl and alkyl sulfonamide and carbamate nitrogen substituents were incorporated by using different formaldimine precursors.

The bioavailability of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids is a critical yet often overlooked factor influencing their efficacy. This review evaluates the bioavailability of EPA/DHA from acute (single-dose) and chronic human studies, focusing on (a) chemical forms such as triacylglycerols (TAG, natural and re-esterified, rTAG), free fatty acids (FFA), and phospholipids (PL) from sources like fish, krill, and microalgae, and (b) delivery methods like microencapsulation and emulsification. Bioavailability for isolated chemically forms followed the order: FFA > PL > rTAG > unmodified TAG > ethyl esters (EE).

Background/objective: Genetic causes of hypertriglyceridemia like familial chylomicronemia syndrome can be overlooked in everyday practice. We report a patient with a rare genetic mutation, highlighting the importance of genetic testing for timely diagnosis and prevention of complications.
Case Report: A 45-year-old Hispanic female presented with serum triglyceride levels of 749 mg/dL, refractory to rosuvastatin 10 mg daily and omega-3 ethyl esters 2 g daily.

Ice wine is produced from concentrated grape juice obtained by the natural freezing and pressing of grapes. The high sugar content of this juice has an impact on fermentation. To investigate the impact of the initial sugar concentration on the fermentation of ice wine, the initial sugar concentration of Vidal ice grape juice was adjusted to 370, 450, 500 and 550 g/L by the addition of glucose.
