A total of 171 datasets of literature and experimental data for metal-ion binding by fulvic and humic acids have been digitized and re-analyzed using the NICA-Donnan model. Generic parameter values have been derived that can be used for modeling in the absence of specific metalion binding measurements. These values complement the previously derived generic descriptions of proton binding. For ions where the ranges of pH, concentration, and ionic strength conditions are well covered by the available data, the generic parameters successfully describe the metalion binding behavior across a very wide range of conditions and for different humic and fulvic acids. Where published data for other metal ions are too sparse to constrain the model well, generic parameters have been estimated by interpolating trends observable in the parameter values of the well-defined data. Recommended generic NICA-Donnan model parameters are provided for 23 metal ions (Al, Am, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cm, Co, CrIII, Cu, Dy, Eu, FeII, FeIII, Hg, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Thv, UVIO2, VIIIO, and Zn) for both fulvic and humic acids. These parameters probably represent the best NICA-Donnan description of metal-ion binding that can be achieved using existing data.

Even though pre-oxidation is usually considered as a promising method to alleviate membrane fouling, information on performance and inner mechanisms of pre-oxidation-influenced membrane fouling during nanofiltration of brackish water is still limited. This study is the first work in which oxidant reduction byproducts and interaction between different pollutants were particularly considered to address these problems. Herein, nanofiltration experiments with different pre-oxidized synthesis brackish water containing inorganic salts and organic pollutants were conducted.

The joint toxicological effects of Cd and As(V) mixture on wheat root as affected by environmental factors, such as pH, coexisting cations, and humic acids etc., were investigated using hydroponic experiments. The interaction and toxicological mechanisms of co-existing Cd and As(V) at the interface of solution and roots in presence of humic acid were further explored by incorporating root cell membrane surface potential ψ into a mechanistic model of combined biotic ligand model (BLM)-based Gouy-Chapman-Stern (GCS) model and NICA-DONNAN model.

Our understanding of the interactions between Fe oxides, humic acids (C), and Cu precipitation products in the environment are limited by our ability to measure specific forms and chemical interactions. Here, we examine the effect of solution pH, Fe:C molar ratio from 1:0 to 1:3, and Cu concentration on dissolved and colloidal Cu concentrations after sorption (SOR) or coprecipitation (CPT) reactions. This included specifically measuring the colloidal phases formed using asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation coupled to a total organic carbon analyzer and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer.

Use of three topical antiseptic compounds-benzalkonium chloride (BAC), benzethonium chloride (BZT), and chloroxylenol (PCMX)-has recently increased because of the phaseout of other antimicrobial ingredients (such as triclosan) in soaps and other disinfecting and sanitizing products. Further, use of sanitizing products in general increased during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We assessed the environmental safety of BAC, BZT, and PCMX based on best available environmental fate and effects data from the scientific literature and privately held sources.

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is an essential bioactive component that may respond to heavy metal stress; however, its exact influence on metal bioavailability and the associated mechanism remains poorly understood. This study investigated the speciation and distribution of heavy metals in soil aggregates associated with GRSP through macroscopic and microscopic approaches. A field study showed that the metal ions were distributed to the macro-aggregate fraction by partitioning the particle size classes during phytoremediation.
