Electrochemotherapy (ECT) delivers nonpermeable anticancer drugs to cell interiors by temporally increasing the permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane under locally applied pulsating electrical stimuli. This treatment results in consistent and enhanced pharmacological effects of drugs on the targeted tissue. ECT has been used for surface skin cancer but never for musculoskeletal tumors. This report describes a clinical trial of ECT for digital chondrosarcoma. A 74-year-old woman with a digital chondrosarcoma was administered electric stimulation with two surface electrodes 10 min after intratumoral multiple injection of bleomycin sulfate and 15 s after intraarterial perfusion of bleomycin sulfate. Biopsy performed after ECT showed 90% tumor necrosis. Marginal resection of the tumor was followed by autologous bone grafting to fill the bone defect. Although the follow-up period was short (3 years), the patient remained disease-free after ECT and was satisfied that amputation of the affected finger could be avoided. This preliminary result suggests that ECT is a viable modality for limb-preserving treatment of patients with sarcoma of the extremities.
Although rare, primary sternal chondrosarcoma (PSC) is the most common primary malignant chest wall tumor. Here, we report a rare case of PSC treated with partial sternal resection and reconstruction. A 47-year-old man presented with subcutaneous anterior chest wall mass and chest pain.
Chondrosarcoma most often forms in the pelvis and femur, and while surgical removal is the main treatment for tumors in the ribs, it can create significant challenges for chest wall reconstruction.
A 49-year-old woman with a diagnosed Grade I chondrosarcoma had a large mass affecting her ribs and diaphragm, leading to a complete surgical resection of the tumor and surrounding affected structures, followed by reconstruction using mesh and sutures.
The histopathology revealed a Grade II chondrosarcoma, but the patient had an uneventful recovery, highlighting the need for careful planning and collaborative approaches in treating such cases.
Spinal chondrosarcomas are uncommon malignant bone tumors that are rare in children. The location and imaging features of the lesion help in formulating a differential diagnosis, though in certain instances the lack of typical imaging findings may elude the differential of a chondrosarcoma. There are only a few reported cases in literature and owing to its rarity and lack of specific management protocols in this age group, making treatment decisions can be complex.
A 82-year-old man presented with left humerus pain. MRI revealed a lesion in the left humerus appearing hyperintense on T2WI and hyperintense on DWI. 18 F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated high FDG uptake in the lesion.
Pulmonary hamartomas are the most common benign tumors of the lung, typically solitary with a diameter≤4 cm, and rarely undergo malignant transformation. We reported a case of multiple pulmonary hamartomas with malignant transformation of a giant pulmonary hamartoma (approximately 10 cm×12 cm in size). The patient was a 61-year-old female who sought medical attention for the discovery of multiple lesions in the right lung during a routine examination.
