Single-trial estimation of multichannel evoked-potential measurements.

Published: February 2003

A method for single-trial estimation of multichannel evoked potentials is presented. The proposed method is based on the regularized least squares scheme. The spatial correlation between the channels is used as additional information in the estimation procedure. Amplitude estimates obtained with the proposed method is compared with the estimates calculated without using the spatial information. The performance of the method is evaluated using simulated and real data of P300 responses measured using auditory stimuli. The multichannel approach is shown to give realistic and comparable information about the amplitude differences of the P300 peak between different channels.

An overview is given of surrogate marker evaluation, starting from the original definition of Prentice and his criteria, the estimation framework of Freedman, the meta-analytic framework, and the evaluation of surrogate endpoints from a causal inference point of view. Attention will be given, in particular, to evaluating tau-PET as a reasonably likely surrogate in Alzheimer's Disease. A meta-analytic surrogate marker evaluation approach will be followed, for a continuous surrogate and a continuous true endpoint.

Consumer-grade EEG devices, such as the InteraXon Muse 2 headband, present a promising opportunity to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of neuroscience research. However, their effectiveness in capturing language-related ERP components, such as the N400, remains underexplored. This study thus aimed to investigate the feasibility of using the Muse 2 to measure the N400 effect in a semantic relatedness judgment task.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers explored how to optimize the number of trials needed for accurate motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) by analyzing personal and experimental variables.
  • They conducted a study with 47 young participants, collecting a total of 550 MEPs at various intensities, and determined how factors like TMS intensity, baseline resting motor threshold, and outlier exclusion influenced the required number of trials.
  • The findings highlight the importance of customizing TMS protocols due to variability, offering predictive equations and a tool to help future researchers select the optimal number of trials based on specific conditions.

Background: Rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) is important for improving outcomes and reducing transmission. Previous studies assessing the impact of Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert), a molecular assay that provides results within 2 h, on mortality have been inconclusive. In this planned analysis of a pragmatic cluster-randomized trial in Uganda, we assessed whether a multicomponent strategy, including decentralized Xpert testing, decreased mortality among adults evaluated for TB.

In time perception research, we typically measure how an observer perceives time intervals by collecting data from multiple trials with a single estimate recorded on each. However, this gives us limited information about the observer's uncertainty for each estimate, which we usually measure from the variability across trials. Our study tested the potential of a modified reproduction task to provide a duration estimate as well as a measure of uncertainty on a single-trial basis.
