Several converging lines of evidence suggest that keratinocyte stem cells including those clonogenic in vitro, are the target cells in skin carcinogenesis. However, the mechanism of their involvement in carcinogenesis continues to be unknown. Recently, we have demonstrated that the number of keratinocyte clonogenic stem cells from mice is a genetically defined and quantitative complex trait. In this study, we analyzed the size of the colonies in BALB/c, C57BL/6, and their (BALB/cxC57BL/6)F1 hybrid mice. We found that the size of the colonies is also genetically regulated and that there are at least two types of clonogenic keratinocytes that form either small or large colonies. Small and large colony numbers were significantly different in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. We performed a genome-wide scan of small and large colony number in the two backcrosses [BALB/cx (BALB/cxC57BL/6)F1]; [C57BL/6x (BALB/cxC57BL/6) F1]; and [(BALB/cxC57BL/6)F1x (BALB/cxC57BL/6)F1] intercross mice. We report here that the loci on chromosomes 4 and 9 play a role in the regulation of large and small colony number respectively. We conclude that mouse epidermis has two major types of stem cells generating small and large colonies, and regulated by different genes. Our results suggest that the loci, including one major and several minor loci linked to the subpopulation of keratinocytes forming small colonies were related, if not identical to, the loci linked to susceptibility or resistance to skin tumor promotion and skin tumor development.

Volcanic provinces are among the most active but least well understood landscapes on Earth. Here, we show that the central Cascade arc, USA, exhibits systematic spatial covariation of topography and hydrology that are linked to aging volcanic bedrock, suggesting systematic controls on landscape evolution. At the Cascade crest, a locus of Quaternary volcanism, water circulates deeply through the upper [Formula: see text]1 km of crust but transitions to shallow and dominantly horizontal flow as rocks age away from the arc front.

Local hybrid functionals (LHs) use a real-space position-dependent admixture of exact exchange (EXX), governed by a local mixing function (LMF). The systematic construction of LMFs has been hampered over the years by a lack of exact physical constraints on their valence behavior. Here, we exploit a data-driven approach and train a new type of "n-LMF" as a relatively shallow neural network.

Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease of global distribution that impacts human and animal health. In rural Latin America, rabies negatively impacts food security and the economy due to losses in livestock production. The common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, is the main reservoir and transmitter of rabies virus (RABV) to domestic animals in Latin America.

Background: Youth soccer players in the UK transition into the professional game at 16 years of age. Understanding the differences between youth and professional standards can help coaches and clubs to support player development during this transition.
Objectives: To (i) assess the differences in technical and possession statistics between different age groups (U16, U18, U23) and outfield positions (central defender [CD], wide defender [WD], central midfielder [CM], attacking midfielder [AM], wide midfielder [WM], striker [ST]), within an English academy soccer programme, during match-play.

Mitochondrial division is a fundamental biological process essensial for cellular functionality and vitality. The prevailing hypothesis that dynamin related protein 1 (Drp1) provides principal control in mitochondrial division, in which it also involves the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the cytoskeleton, does not account for all the observations. Therefore.
