Serological tests are the most widely used methods for the diagnosis of Brucella infections, since bacterial isolation techniques are time consuming. The conventional serological methods are the tube and slide agglutination tests, however enzyme immunoassays (ELISA) have gained importance recently as rapid diagnostic techniques. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performances of standard tube agglutination (STA, Wright test), slide agglutination (Rose-Bengal, RB) and ELISA-IgG and -IgM methods, in the serological diagnosis of brucellosis. For this purpose, Brucella antibodies have been searched in the serum samples of 184 patients (92 acute and 92 chronic brucellosis cases, of these 21 had positive blood cultures) and 20 healthy blood donors, who inhabit in the same region, as the control group. The positivity rates of STA (titers > or = 1/160), ELISA-IgG and -IgM in the patient group were found 83.7%, 61.9% and 49.5% respectively, while RB positivities for Brucella abortus and B. melitensis were 61.9% and 67.9%, respectively. In the control group STA and ELISA tests showed negative results, but RB for B. abortus and B. melitensis were positive in 25% and 30% of controls, respectively. Since ELISA and RB were found less sensitive than STA, it was concluded that STA is still the most reliable method for the serological diagnosis of brucellosis.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a significant bacterial pathogen that causes infantile diarrhea, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The lack of a reliable diagnostic method greatly contributes to the increased occurrence and severity of the disease. This study aimed at developing of a cost-effective, rapid, and efficient immunodiagnostic assay for detecting EPEC infection.

Prevalence and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Foodborne Pathogens from Raw Livestock Meat in China, 2021.

Microorganisms

October 2024

NHC Key Laboratory of Food Safety Risk Assessment, Chinese Academy of Medical Science Research Unit (2019RU014), China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, Beijing 100022, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assesses pathogenic bacteria prevalence in raw livestock meat (pork, beef, mutton) in China for 2021, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to inform public health and food safety practices.
  • - Out of 2,515 meat samples, contamination rates were highest in pork for certain pathogens, with specific prevalence noted in chilled and frozen meat compared to fresh.
  • - The study found high overall resistance rates in bacteria isolated from meat, with ampicillin and tetracycline showing the most significant resistance among the tested antimicrobial agents.

  • * In a study conducted in Northwest Ethiopia from June 2022 to August 2023 across 58 dairy farms, 362 samples were tested for NTS, resulting in detection of 28 isolates (7.7%), with S. Uganda being the most prevalent serovar.
  • * The study found that 100% of NTS isolates had the invA virulence gene, 21.4% had spvC, and a high proportion (89.3%) were resistant to at least

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate and rapid screening of adenocarcinoma cells in serous cavity effusion is essential for diagnosing metastatic tumors and initiating timely treatment, but this process can be challenging for pathologists.
  • Fixed agglutination cell blocks enhance diagnostic sensitivity by analyzing larger effusion volumes, while advancements like whole slide imaging and artificial intelligence aim to support pathologists in improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.
  • This study introduces a novel weakly supervised deep learning model that, combined with cell block technology, demonstrates high performance in screening serous adenocarcinoma, reduces pathologist workload, and shows potential for clinical applications, along with creating the first public datasets for further research.

Relapse Risk Factors for Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia: A Retrospective Study of 163 Dogs.

J Am Anim Hosp Assoc

September 2024

BluePearl North East Portland, Portland, Florida (E.W.).

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is defined as an immune-mediated destruction of erythrocytes. Relapses are recognized, but risk factors are poorly defined. We hypothesized that a lower packed cell volume (PCV) on presentation, more transfusions during hospitalization, or a higher total bilirubin would be associated with an increased risk of relapse.
