Published: April 2003

Circular dichroism spectra of a series of 4-(tetra-hydroxy-tetryl-1-yl)2-phenyl-2H-1,2,3-triazoles were measured and the sign of their Cotton effects was correlated to the absolute configuration of the hydroxyl group alpha to the triazole base moiety. Those having the D-glycero-configuration in their Fischer projection formula show positive Cotton effect and those with the L-glycero-configuration show negative Cotton effect. This correlation was extended for the assignment of the anomeric configuration of the corresponding glycofuranosyl-C-nucleosides.

Colloidal chemistry provides an assortment of synthetic tools for tuning the shape of semiconductor nanocrystals. To fully exploit the shape- and structure-dependent properties of semiconductor nanorods, high-precision control on growth and design is essential. However, achieving this precision is highly challenging due to the high temperatures (>350 °C) and short reaction times (<8 minutes) often required for these reactions.

Highly concentrated solutions of asymmetric semiconductor magic-sized clusters (MSCs) of cadmium sulfide, cadmium selenide, and cadmium telluride were directed through a controlled drying meniscus front, resulting in the formation of chiral MSC assemblies. This process aligned their transition dipole moments and produced chiroptic films with exceptionally strong circular dichroism. -factors reached magnitudes as high as 1.

Dark-Field Absorbance Circular Dichroism of Oriented Chiral Thin Films.

Department of Chemistry, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907, United States.

Dark-field and confocal approaches to circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy of uniaxial thin films examine the relationship between symmetry and incoherence in the nonreciprocal CD response, or the component that is antisymmetric about the light propagation direction. Modifying a conventional CD spectrometer for low-angle scattering detection isolates incoherent contributions to nonreciprocal CD of drop-cast thin films, boasting 5-to-10-fold enhancements in CD dissymmetry parameters. Conversely, confocal detection suppresses the nonreciprocal CD response.

Two undescribed rearranged diterpenoids, lobopaucinoids A and B (1 and 2), along with thirteen undescribed lobane-type diterpenoids lobopaucinoids C-O (3-15) including a C (11) and two C (12 and 13) undescribed norditerpenoids, were isolated from the soft coral Lobophytum pauciflorum Ehrenberg (Sarcophytidae family) collected from Xisha Islands of the South China Sea. Additionally, two undescribed prenyleudesmane-type diterpenoids, lobopaucinoids P and Q (16 and 17), as well as two known lobane diterpenoids (18 and 19), were also obtained. Their structures were elucidated based on comprehensive spectroscopic data, Mosher's method, Mo(OAc) or Rh(OCOCF)-induced circular dichroism experiment, quantum chemical calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction and literature comparison.
