Published: December 2002

The objective of the work was to assess, based on the results of studies conducted abroad and the author's own results from the Prague register of diabetic patients, whether there exist differences in the epidemiology, clinical course of diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications between female and male diabetics. As far as type 1 DM is concerned there are significant differences in the clinical course of diabetes, i.e. deteriorated compensation of DM in girls and women in conjunction with menstruation and the menopause. As compared with men, young women have a higher mortality on account of diabetic nephropathy, and at any age they have as higher incidence of hypertension. In DM2 they have also a high incidence of hypertension and risk of compensation of DM during menstruation and later during the menopause. A significantly less frequent complication in women is ischaemia of the lower extremities. From the epidemiological aspect a higher prevalence of DM2 was proved in women after the age of 65 years.

Dynamic Importance of Genomic and Clinical Risk for Coronary Artery Disease Over the Life Course.

Circ Genom Precis Med

January 2025

Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. (S.M.U., K.P., B.T., A.C.F., P.N.).

Background: Earlier identification of high coronary artery disease (CAD) risk individuals may enable more effective prevention strategies. However, existing 10-year risk frameworks are ineffective at earlier identification. We sought to understand how the variable importance of genomic and clinical factors across life stages may significantly improve lifelong CAD event prediction.

Background: Learning health systems (LHS) have the potential to use health data in real time through rapid and continuous cycles of data interrogation, implementing insights to practice, feedback, and practice change. However, there is a lack of an appropriately skilled interprofessional informatics workforce that can leverage knowledge to design innovative solutions. Therefore, there is a need to develop tailored professional development training in digital health, to foster skilled interprofessional learning communities in the health care workforce in Australia.

We report a case of an industrial homeworker diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis by UV-curing acrylic resin for crafts. Approximately 2 months after a female in her 40s started producing handicrafts using resin, itchy desquamative erythema and vesicles occurred on her eyelids and palms. The course of the symptoms suggested that her dermatitis was occupational origin.

Background: The pathogenic distribution of co-infections and immunological status of patients infected with human adenovirus serotypes 3 or 7 (HAdV-3 or HAdV-7) were poorly understood.

Methods: This study involved a retrospective analysis of respiratory specimens collected from enrolled children with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), positive for HAdV-3 or HAdV-7 from January 2017 to December 2019. Demographic data, clinical features, laboratory and radiographic findings were compared to delineate the impact of co-infections, and immune responses on clinical severity of HAdV-3 or HAdV-7 infections.

Exploring the microbiome-gut-testis axis in testicular germ cell tumors.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

January 2025

Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, Bratislava and National Cancer Institute, Bratislava, Slovakia.

The microbiome-gut-testis axis has emerged as a significant area of interest in understanding testicular cancer, particularly testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs), which represent the most common malignancy in young men. The interplay between the gut and testicular microbiomes is hypothesized to influence tumorigenesis and reproductive health, underscoring the complex role of microbial ecosystems in disease pathology. The microbiome-gut-testis axis encompasses complex interactions between the gut microbiome, systemic immune modulation, and the local microenvironment of the testis.
