In flowering plants, two male gametes from a single pollen grain fuse with two female gametes, the egg and central cells, to form the embryo and endosperm, respectively. The question then arises whether the two male gametes fuse randomly with the egg and central cells. We investigated this question using two nearly isogenic maize lines with supernumerary B chromosomes (TB10L18) or without (r-tester). B chromosomes regularly undergo non-disjunction at the second pollen mitosis, producing one sperm cell with zero B chromosomes and one with two. We first confirmed earlier studies showing an excess of transmission of the B chromosomes to the embryo rather than to the endosperm. We then tested the possibility of a directed fertilization. For TB10L18 pollen, we could demonstrate the existence of a size dimorphism between the two sperm cells, correlated to the content in B chromosomes, as detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). However, no directed fusion of B chromosome containing sperm to egg cells could be detected when using in vitro fertilization. The absence of directed fusion in vitro could also be demonstrated for control lines. We conclude that both male gametes have the capacity to fuse with the egg cell in maize, although sexual reproduction results in a preferential transmission of supernumerary B chromosomes.

Libido plays a crucial role in influencing semen quality, yet the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. As a central axis in male goose reproduction, the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular-external genitalia (HPTE) axis may contribute to the regulation of this process. In this study, we established a rating scale for goose libido based on average number of massages to erection (ANM) and the erection type, and evaluated semen quality across the entire flock.

Research Question: Does a short co-incubation of gametes in conventional IVF affect post-insemination outcomes and embryo morphokinetics?
Design: Sibling oocyte randomized pilot study conducted between December 2020 and March 2023. Eligible couples (n = 55) were women aged 18-43 years with BMI 35 km/m or lower and male normal semen parameters. Cumulus oocyte complexes (COC) (six to 12) were randomized in a 1:1:2 proportion in long (16-18 h) or short (2 h) co-incubation IVF exposure and ICSI, respectively.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common form of dementia characterized by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) and phosphorylated tau proteins in the brain. While clinical observations are typically used for AD diagnosis, postmortem studies have revealed individuals without dementia symptoms but with high AD pathology, known as resilient individuals. Calcium permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) have been implicated in the calcium dyshomeostasis of AD, but it is unclear whether they are found or behave differently at the electrophysiological level in resilient and control individuals compared to AD patients.

The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of (NAC) on testicular hypoxia caused by varicocele, focusing specifically on the regulation of genes related to apoptosis and oxidative stress in the testes of mature Wistar rats. Thirty-two rats were divided into four groups: Control (Sham), hypoxia, testicular hypoxia treated with NAC (Hypoxia + NAC), and healthy animals treated with NAC. After the 8-week treatment period, testicular histopathology and the levels of oxidative stress markers-superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and malondialdehyde (MDA)-in serum were examined.

Background: The massive harmful effects of cigarette (tobacco) smoking on reproduction and fecundity are apparent. Even smoking cessation is often suggested for infertility patients by clinic doctors, while the impact of smoking cessation on semen quality in patients with oligoasthenospermia is uncovered.
Methods: Ninety oligoasthenospermia patients with long tobacco smoking history were directed by andrology doctors to cease smoking, and their cessation was followed up for 3 to 6 months.
