Underestimated Industrial Ammonia Emission in China Uncovered by Material Flow Analysis.

Environ Pollut

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resources Reuse, School of the Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, China; Collaborative Innovation Center of Atmospheric Environment and Equipment Technology, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, Nanjing, 210044, China. Electronic address:

Ammonia (NH) is crucial in fine particulate matter (PM) formation, but past estimations on industrial NH emissions remain highly uncertain. In this study, the flow of NH within air pollution control devices (APCDs) were investigated basing on material flow analysis with in-situ measurements of NH concentrations at the inlets and outlets of each APCD. Then, by combing emission factors updated with recent in-situ measurements and provincial-level activity data from statistical yearbooks and associated reports, NH emissions from various industrial sources, as well as their spatial distribution across China in 2020, were evaluated.

Chemical Transformation of Vaping Emissions under Indoor Atmospheric Aging Processes.

Chem Res Toxicol

January 2025

Department of Environmental Sciences, University of California, Riverside, California 92521, United States.

E-cigarette emissions, which contain a variety of hazardous compounds, contribute significantly to indoor air pollution and raise concerns about secondhand exposure to vaping byproducts. Compared to fresh vape emissions, our understanding of chemically aged products in indoor environments remains incomplete. Terpenes are commonly used as flavoring agents in e-liquids, which have the ability to react with the dominant indoor oxidant ozone (O) to produce reactive oxygenated byproducts and result in new particle formation.

Revealing the composition and optical properties of marine carbonaceous aerosols: A case of the eastern China marginal seas.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Qingdao Key Laboratory for Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution in Coastal Cities, Environment Research Institute, Shandong University, Qingdao 266237, China. Electronic address:

Marine aerosols are major components of atmospheric aerosols, playing substantial roles in influencing the regional and global environment and climate. Marine aerosols are not only produced by seawater directly, but also by indirect processes such as atmospheric oxidation of marine bioactive gases as well as terrestrial transport. Over the Eastern China Marginal Seas (ECMS), marine aerosols are strongly affected by marine emission and transport of terrestrial aerosols.

Foot-and-mouth disease in Asia.

Virus Res

January 2025

Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202, Bangladesh. Electronic address:

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious transboundary disease prevalent across the Asian continent, affecting both wild and domestic artiodactyls. The disease is caused by a virus belonging to the Aphthovirus genus of the Picornaviridae family which is categorized into seven serotypes: C, O, A, SAT1, SAT2, SAT3, and Asia1. The virus spreads through direct and indirect contact, including semen, meat, fomites, ingestion, and aerosols.

The unprecedented rise in atmospheric aerosols, coupled with their intricate interactions with the environment through a wide array of physical, chemical, and biological processes, has profoundly impacted global climate. Their presence in the atmosphere scatters and absorbs solar radiation, thus altering the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth's surface. These direct effects, along with the indirect effects of aerosols, have significantly altered atmospheric temperatures, land surface processes, global surface temperature, hydrological cycle, and ecosystems.
