This article introduces an innovative multipurpose system that integrates a solar power plant with a coastal wind farm to generate refrigeration for refinery processes and industrial air conditioning. The system comprises multiple wind turbines, solar power plants, the Kalina cycle to provide partial energy for the absorption refrigeration cycle used in industrial air conditioning, and a compression refrigeration cycle for propane gas liquefaction. An extensive energy and exergy analysis was conducted on the proposed system, considering various thermodynamic parameters such as the solar power plant's energy output, the absorption chiller's cooling load, the electricity generated by the turbines, the wind turbines' power output, and the energy efficiency and exergy of each cycle within the system.

Extreme Synergy in the Random-Energy Model.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Initiative for the Theoretical Sciences and CUNY-Princeton Center for the Physics of Biological Function, The Graduate Center, CUNY, New York, New York 10016, USA.

The random-energy model (REM), a solvable spin-glass model, has impacted an incredibly diverse set of problems, from protein folding to combinatorial optimization, to many-body localization. Here, we explore a new connection to secret sharing. We derive an analytic expression for the mutual information between any two disjoint thermodynamic subsystems of the REM.

Background: The fracture of an endodontic instrument within the root canal system can occur during root canal therapy, complicating thorough cleaning and shaping. Consequently, managing the broken fragment becomes crucial.

Methods: Eighty Nickel-titanium (NiTi) #20 K-files (Mani, Tochigi, Japan) were cut 8 mm from the tip, fixed into a corkboard, and classified into five groups (n = 14 each).

Climate drives the long-term ant male production in a tropical community.

Sci Rep

Grupo de Investigación Ecología y Evolución en los Trópicos-EETrop, Universidad de Las Américas, Quito, Ecuador.

Forecasting insect responses to environmental variables at local and global spatial scales remains a crucial task in Ecology. However, predicting future responses requires long-term datasets, which are rarely available for insects, especially in the tropics. From 2002 to 2017, we recorded male ant incidence of 155 ant species at ten malaise traps on the 50-ha ForestGEO plot in Barro Colorado Island.

X-ray crystallography is one of the leading tools to analyze the 3-D structure, and therefore, function of proteins and other biological macromolecules. Traditional methods of mounting individual crystals for X-ray diffraction analysis can be tedious and result in damage to fragile protein crystals. Furthermore, the advent of multi-crystal and serial crystallography methods explicitly require the mounting of larger numbers of crystals.
