Published: January 2003

The biodegradability of 30 substituted phenols and benzoic acids was determined by BOD technique. The molecular weight (Mw), heat of formation (Hf) and the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (E(Homo)) of the studied compounds were calculated by the quantum chemical method MOPAC6.0-AMI. The quantitative structure-biodegradability relationships (QSBRs) were developed by the linear regression method and neural network approach, respectively. It has been shown that the neural network method is able to provide a superior fit to the training set data and test set data and produce a lower prediction error than the linear regression method.

The widespread use of electronic devices has led to increased blue light exposure, highlighting the need for effective radiation blockers with blue light protection. Two synthetic 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole derivatives named azo-4'-benzoxazole and azo-5'-benzoxazole have shown an unprecedented blue light absorption capacity but had not been subjected to a safety evaluation. This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic activities of these compounds.

UPLC-MS metabolite profiling and antioxidant activity of extract.

PeerJ

January 2025

Cancer Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Zhejiang Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tongde Hospital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Background: The objective of the present study is to examine the total phenolic and flavonoid content of an ethanol extract of and to evaluate its phytochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and capacity to protect DNA from damage. This pharmaceutical/food resource mushroom may serve as a novel substitute functional food for health-conscious consumers, given its promising source of phenolics and flavonoids.

Methods: ethanol extract (SEE) was evaluated for total phenolic and flavonoid contents, while UPLC-MS analysis was used for terpenoids, phenylpropanoid, flavonoids, steroidal, phenols identification, and function prediction.

Chemical leukoderma is a disorder induced by chemicals such as rhododendrol and monobenzone. These compounds possess a -substituted phenol moiety and undergo oxidation into highly reactive and toxic -quinone metabolites by tyrosinase. This metabolic activation plays a critical role in the development of leukoderma through the production of damage to melanocytes and immunological responses.

The aims of this study were to improve the functional and nutritional properties of fermented black carrot juice by using sweet and acid whey in the production of fermented black carrot juice, to transform whey into a value-added product and to determine the effect of whey addition on the fermentation process. Whey was utilized as a water substitute in the formulation of the beverage prior to fermentation, and five distinct formulations were developed based on the type and proportion of whey (0% whey (control sample), 25% acid whey, 100% acid whey, 25% sweet whey, 100% sweet whey). Microbiological, sensorial, phytochemical, and physicochemical analyses were performed on samples taken during fermentation and on samples fermented and then resting.

Increasing the Orthogonality of 4-Pyridiniophenols: An NMR Study of Their Solvatomagnetism.

Magn Reson Chem

January 2025

Departamento de Química Orgánica y Fisicoquímica, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas y Farmacéuticas, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

The H- and C-NMR spectra of three substituted N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)pyridinium perchlorates, precursors of solvatochromic 4-pyridiniophenolate betaines, were recorded in deuterated acetone, dimethylsulfoxide, and acetonitrile, and their spectral behavior in these solvents was analyzed as evidence of the solute-solvent interactions present in solution. The effect of the increasing orthogonality between the phenolic and pyridinium fragments was clearly evident from the obtained spectra, thus shedding light on the ground-state structures of their deprotonated solvatochromic derivatives and their interactions with the solvent.
