[formula: see text] Simple dialkyl malonate esters, for example diethyl malonate, exhibit relatively limited scope as carbon nucleophiles in the Mitsunobu dehydrative alkylation reaction. In contrast, bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) malonate readily undergoes dehydrative alkylation with primary alcohols, and using only a slight excess of malonate gives monoalkylated product in good yield. Some secondary alcohols can also be employed, and bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) malonates can be used in a second dehydrative alkylation to give dialkylated products in good to excellent yield.

The ion binding to the lipid/water interface can substantially influence the structural, functional, and dynamic properties of the cell membrane. Despite extensive research on ion-lipid interactions, the specific effects of ion binding on the polarity and hydration at the lipid/water interface remain poorly understood. This study explores the influence of three biologically relevant divalent cations─Mg, Ca, and Zn─on the depth-dependent interfacial polarity and hydration of zwitterionic DPPC lipid in its gel phase at room temperature.

Stereoselective Synthesis of (±)-Tetraponerine-2 and -4 via the Gold(I)-Catalyzed Intramolecular Dehydrative Amination of Allylic Alcohols.

College of Pharmacy & Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ewha Womans University, 52 Ewhayeodae-gil, Seodaemun-Gu, Seoul 03760, Republic of Korea.

The concise and efficient total synthesis of (±)-tetraponerine-2 () and (±)-tetraponerine-4 () was achieved in 9% and 14% overall yield, respectively. The key step included the diastereoselective gold(I)-catalyzed intramolecular dehydrative amination of an allylic alcohol-tethered sulfamide to produce the 1,3-diamine moiety. The resulting olefinic side chain was then elaborated by cross-metathesis and cyclized to a five-membered pyrrolidine or a six-membered piperidine ring by intramolecular Mitsunobu -alkylation.

The synergistic effect of co-pyrolysis for the mixtures of sewage sludge (SS), rice straw (RS) and composite plastic wastes (PE&PP) has been investigated with the aim of high gas yields and hydrogen generation. In this context, the applicability of high temperature pyrolysis technology was evaluated at both rotary type batch reactor and rotating screw type continuous reactor operating under the industrially relevant conditions. Gas yields have been improved at increasing the operating temperatures up to 850 °C.

A chlorine-free microwave-assisted, ionic liquid-catalyzed esterification of arylsulfonic acids with alcohols: an experimental and theoretical study.

December 2024

Department of Organic Chemistry and Technology, Faculty of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, 1111 Budapest, Műegyetem rkp. 3, Hungary.

In the area of esterification of heteroatomic acids, after the microwave-assisted ionic liquid-catalyzed esterification of phosphinic acids, the esterification of arylsulfonic acids was also developed applying a 14-fold excess of alcohols at 200 °C in the presence of 10% butyl-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate as an additive. The esterifications were optimized, and the effect of the substituents in the aromatic ring was evaluated. At the same time, a similar procedure described by Mandal using only one equivalent of alcohol at 120 °C for 5 min in toluene was refuted.

Organosilicon materials have shown potential as dehydration agents for waterlogged wooden artifacts. These materials can polymerize under normal conditions to form polymers with favorable mechanical strength, antibacterial properties, and aging resistance. However, the insolubility of most organosilicon hindered their penetration into waterlogged wood, which may lead to an unwanted cracking.
