[Age differences in the post-reperfusion recovery of structure of the human myocardium].

Published: March 2003

The ultrastructure of myocardium was studied in children and adults with congenital heart defects 1 hour after intraoperational cardiac arrest followed by reperfusion. It was established that the intensity of adaptation reactions which provide the structural homeostasis, is progressively reduced with age resulting in gradual depletion of compensatory reserves. The presence of preoperational compensatory-adaptive reserve in children defines the possibility and adequacy of post-ischemic myocardial regeneration and restoration of its contractile function. The depletion of compensatory reserves in adults is one of the main reasons for development of post-reperfusion myocardial injury and of its plastic insufficiency.

Background: Spatial working memory is crucial for processing visual and spatial information, serving as a foundation for complex cognitive tasks. However, the effects of prolonged sleep deprivation on its dynamics and underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the specific trends and neural mechanisms underlying spatial working memory alterations during 36 h of acute sleep deprivation.

Background: A recent study conducted by the laboratory of the first author revealed that major depression is composed of two distinct subtypes: major dysmood disorder (MDMD) and simple dysmood disorder (SDMD). The latter is a less severe phenotype with fewer aberrant biological pathways. MDMD, but not SDMD, patients were identified to have highly sensitized cytokine/growth factor networks using stimulated whole blood cultures.

Glutathione-scavenging natural-derived ferroptotic nano-amplifiers strengthen tumor therapy through aggravating iron overload and lipid peroxidation.

State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, University of Macau, Macau SAR 999078, China. Electronic address:

Nanomedicine-driven ferroptosis has emerged as a promising tumor treatment strategy through delivering exogenous iron and aggravating the lethal accumulation of lipid peroxides (LPO). However, the compensatory mechanisms of ferroptosis defense systems in cancer cells compromise the therapeutic efficacy and lead to potential side effects. Herein, a highly effective ferroptotic nano-amplifier is designed to synergistically promote ferroptosis via increasing intracellular labile iron, exacerbating lipid peroxidation and overcoming the defense system.

Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury remains a major contributor to organ dysfunction following transient ischemic insults. Although numerous interventions have been found effective to reduce IR injury in preclinical models, none of these therapies have been successfully translated to the clinical setting. In the context of the persistent translational gap, we systematically investigated the mechanisms implicated in IR injury using kidney donation and transplantation as a clinical model of IR.

Neurons require high amounts energy, and mitochondria help to fulfill this requirement. Dysfunctional mitochondria trigger problems in various neuronal tasks. Using the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) as a model synapse, we previously reported that Mitochondrial Complex I (MCI) subunits were required for maintaining NMJ function and growth.
