Maize is a major crop plant with essential agronomical interests and a model plant for genetic studies. With the development of plant genetic engineering technology, many transgenic strains of this monocotyledonous plant have been produced over the past decade. In particular, field-cultivated insect-resistant Bt-maize hybrids are at the centre of an intense debate between scientists and organizations recalcitrant to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This debate, which addresses both safety and ethical aspects, has raised questions about the impact of genetically modified (GM) crops on the biodiversity of traditional landraces and on the environment. Here, we review some of the key points of maize genetic history as well as the methods used to stably transform this cereal. We describe the genetically engineered Bt-maizes available for field cultivation and we investigate the controversial reports on their impacts on non-target insects such as the monarch butterfly and on the flow of transgenes into Mexican maize landraces.

Objective: The current study aimed to develop an experimental approach for the direct co-culture of three-dimensional breast cancer cells using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq).
Methods: The following four cell culture groups were established in the Matrigel matrix: the untreated Michigan Cancer Foundation (MCF)-7 cell culture group, the MCF-7 cell culture plus cisplatin group, the untreated co-culture group, and the cell co-culture plus cisplatin group. For cell co-culture, MCF-7 cells, human mammary fibroblasts, and human umbilical vein endothelial cells were mixed at a ratio of 1:1:1.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are innate immune cells that exert far reaching influence over the tumor microenvironment (TME). Depending on cues within the local environment, TAMs may promote tumor angiogenesis, cancer cell invasion and immunosuppression, or, alternatively, inhibit tumor progression via neoantigen presentation, tumoricidal reactive oxygen species generation and pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion. Therefore, TAMs have a pivotal role in determining tumor progression and response to therapy.

Introduction: Discussion of gene-modified investigational products (IPs) in clinical trials has largely focused on nucleic acid-based vectors, viral vectors, and gene-modified cellular products involving mammalian cells. Use of bacteria and bacteriophages as IPs is resurgent, and discussion of the risks associated with genetic modification of these organisms has become pertinent to the biosafety community.
Methods: This review article summarizes the United States Food and Drug Administration classification for IPs comprising bacteria or bacteriophages and provides an overview of clinical trials conducted to date involving genetically modified bacteria.
