Introduction: We investigated the effects of timing of detection and transplacental fluorinated steroid treatment on ventricular heart rate (HR) and age at pacemaker implantation in fetal third-degree atrioventricular block (AVB).

Material And Methods: Twenty-five of 31 fetuses diagnosed with Ro/SSA autoantibody-positive AVB II-III at our tertiary fetal cardiology center (2000-2020) and AVB III as final feto-neonatal outcome were reviewed.

Results: AVB was detected approximately 5 weeks earlier in pregnancy if followed in a surveillance program compared to cases referred from primary care for bradycardia (20.

The success of immediate adaptation to extrauterine life depends on appropriate lung function, however, elective cesarean section can increase the risk of respiratory distress as a result of reduced pulmonary fluid absorption. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of birth mode on pulmonary clearance and respiratory performance of canine neonates in the transition period. For this purpose, 37 neonates were selected according to the obstetric condition: Vaginal Eutocia (n = 17) and Elective C-section (n = 20).

Neocortex expansion during evolution is linked to higher numbers of neurons, which are thought to result from increased proliferative capacity and neurogenic potential of basal progenitor cells during development. Here, we show that EREG, encoding the growth factor EPIREGULIN, is expressed in the human developing neocortex and in gorilla cerebral organoids, but not in the mouse neocortex. Addition of EPIREGULIN to the mouse neocortex increases proliferation of basal progenitor cells, whereas EREG ablation in human cortical organoids reduces proliferation in the subventricular zone.

Background: The Perinatal Center of the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden has initiated the telemedical healthcare network "SAFE BIRTH" to coordinate and improve specialized care in non-metropolitan regions for pregnant women and newborns. The network incorporates five intervention bundles (IB): (1) Multi-professional, inter-disciplinary prenatal care plan; (2) Neonatal resuscitation; (3) Neonatal antibiotic stewardship; (4) Inter-facility transfer of premature and sick newborns; (5) Psycho-social support for parents. We evaluate if the network improves care close to home for pregnant women, premature and sick newborns.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnant individuals are at higher risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes, making it crucial to predict adverse maternal and fetal outcomes for timely clinical intervention.
  • A study created a comprehensive database of 1501 COVID-positive pregnant patients, utilizing various data points to train machine learning models aimed at predicting critical health risks.
  • The Random Forest model outperformed others, successfully identifying high-risk patients with 83.3% sensitivity and achieving an overall accuracy of 89%, utilizing 25 key features related to patient health and symptoms.
