The relationship between operative time, the intermediate equivalent value (IEV) and the complexity of common general surgical operations was examined. Correlation was found between the BUPA schedule values for procedures categorized as intermediate and major, but complex major vascular reconstruction and oesophagogastric resection for cancer occupied significantly more theatre time than the four intermediate equivalents allocated by the Collins or BUPA schedule. Moreover, anaesthetic preparation time for complex major surgery in the latter surgical subspecialities contributed at least one further intermediate value. Re-evaluation of the ideal IEV weighting of all surgical operations including anaesthetic input from larger similar audits would allow more accurate audits of surgeons' work-load, and also facilitate transparent intensive management of operating theatre resource.

Visual Performance Correlation with Corneal Aberrometric Profile and Pupil Size After Implantation of a Trifocal Hydrophobic IOL.

Clin Ophthalmol

December 2024

Département de Recherche Clinique, Institut Ophtalmologique de l'Ouest (IOO) Jules Verne, Nantes, France.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical outcomes obtained after cataract surgery involving the implantation of a trifocal hydrophobic intraocular lens (IOL) and to determine if pupil size and the corneal aberrometric profile correlate to visual acuity at different distances.

Methods: 49 patients (98 eyes) underwent bilateral cataract surgery with the placement of FineVision HP IOLs for presbyopia and were assessed at 1- and 3- to 6-months post-surgery. Postoperatively, refraction, monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) and the binocular defocus curve were measured.

Given the complexities of continuous bioprocessing, it is critical to thoroughly investigate the process parameters unique to multi-column chromatography (MCC) and their potential impacts. However, existing studies have focused on either loading densities or residence time at steady states only, and their combined impact on critical quality attributes (CQAs) especially during transient phases were less known. In this study, we investigated the impact of critical process parameters during both steady-state and transient phases (start-up, close-down, and intermediate perturbation) through full factorial design.

Formic acid (HCOOH) is one of the essential molecules for CO utilization including methanol synthesis and hydrogen carriers. In this study, we have investigated the chemical processes of hydrogen and HCOOH on a dilute-alloy Pd-Cu(111) surface using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The present Pd-Cu(111) surface was prepared at 500 K, and the observed core-level shifts of Pd 3d indicate that Pd atoms were located at the surface and subsurface sites: 335.

Cyclic peptides have higher stability and better properties as therapeutic agents than their linear peptide analogues. Consequently, intramolecular click chemistry is becoming an increasingly popular method for the synthesis of cyclic peptides from their isomeric linear peptides. However, assessing the purity of these cyclic peptides by mass spectrometry is a significant challenge, as the linear and cyclic peptides have identical masses.
