The report deals with 1,005 discographic examinations in 380 patients with a cervical syndrome. Three cases of a discitis were observed, of which two had to be regarded as complications of the examination. The aetiology, clinical features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis are described: therapeutic and prophylactic problems and possible complications are discussed. With a complication rate of 0.2%, the authors recommend contrast demonstration of the cervical disc as a supplementary radiological method for the investigation of the cervical syndrome.

Background: We have noted that some adolescents and young adults with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) report difficulty with arms-overhead activities, suggestive of brachial plexus dysfunction or thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Lemierre's syndrome is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of head and neck infections, such as bacterial pharyngitis or tonsillitis. It is characterized by the extension of infection into the lateral pharyngeal spaces, leading to subsequent septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein(s). Although relatively uncommon since the advent of appropriate antibiotic therapy, the incidence of Lemierre's syndrome has increased in the past 15 years, especially among young, healthy adults.
