Non-Abelian holonomies can be generated and detected in certain superconducting nanocircuits. Here we consider an example where the non-Abelian operations are related to the adiabatic charge dynamics of the Josephson network. We demonstrate that such a device can be applied both for adiabatic charge pumping and as an implementation of a quantum computer.

Two-dimensional non-Abelian Thouless pump.

Non-Abelian Thouless pumps are periodically driven systems designed by the non-Abelian holonomy principle, in which quantized transport of degenerate eigenstates emerges, exhibiting noncommutative features such that the outcome depends on the pumping sequence. The study of non-Abelian Thouless pump is currently restricted to 1D systems, while extending it to higher-dimensional systems will not only provide effective means to probe non-Abelian physics in high-dimensional topological systems, but also expand the dimension and type of associated non-Abelian geometric phase matrix for potential applications. Here, we propose the design and experimental realization of 2D non-Abelian Thouless pumps on a photonic chip with 2D photonic waveguide arrays, where degenerate photonic modes are topologically pumped simultaneously along two real-space directions.

Non-Abelian Holonomy in Degenerate Non-Hermitian Systems.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2024

State Key Laboratory of Integrated Optoelectronics, College of Electronic Science and Engineering, Jilin University, Changchun 130012, China.

Non-Abelian holonomy, a noncommutative process that measures the parallel transport of non-Abelian gauge fields, has so far been realized in degenerate Hermitian systems with degenerate eigenstates or nondegenerate non-Hermitian systems with exceptional points. Here, we introduce non-Abelian holonomy into degenerate non-Hermitian systems possessing degenerate exceptional points and degenerate energy topologies. The interplay between energy degeneracy and energy topology around exceptional points leads to a non-Abelian holonomy with multiple energy levels and multiple degenerate levels simultaneously, going beyond that in degenerate Hermitian systems with a single energy level, or in nondegenerate non-Hermitian systems with a single degenerate level.

Non-Abelian Holonomy of Majorana Zero Modes Coupled to a Chaotic Quantum Dot.

Phys Rev Lett

January 2024

Dahlem Center for Complex Quantum Systems and Physics Department, Freie Universität Berlin, Arnimallee 14, 14195 Berlin, Germany.

If a quantum dot is coupled to a topological superconductor via tunneling contacts, each contact hosts a Majorana zero mode in the limit of zero transmission. Close to a resonance and at a finite contact transparency, the resonant level in the quantum dot couples the Majorana modes, but a ground-state degeneracy per fermion parity subspace remains if the number of Majorana modes coupled to the dot is five or larger. Upon varying shape-defining gate voltages while remaining close to resonance, a nontrivial evolution within the degenerate ground-state manifold is achieved.

The geometric phase is a fundamental quantity characterizing the holonomic feature of quantum systems. It is well known that the evolution operator of a quantum system undergoing a cyclic evolution can be simply written as the product of holonomic and dynamical components for the three special cases concerning the Berry phase, adiabatic non-Abelian geometric phase, and nonadiabatic Abelian geometric phase. However, for the most general case concerning the nonadiabatic non-Abelian geometric phase, how to separate the evolution operator into holonomic and dynamical components is a long-standing open problem.

We describe the mathematical properties of pairwise comparisons matrices with coefficients in an arbitrary group. Inspired by the well-known mathematical structures of quantum gravity and lattice gauge theories in physics and by the application of this framework in economy by other authors, we describe how the same structures arise in pairwise comparisons. First, we provide a vocabulary adapted for the description of main algebraic properties of inconsistency maps, and give a full description of elementary properties that extend to our generalized setting.
