The presence of carbapenem-resistant (CR) has become one of the leading causes of life-threatening, hospital-acquired infections globally, especially with a notable prevalence in intensive care units (ICUs). The cross-transmission of microorganisms between patients and the hospital setting is crucial in the development of CR colonization and subsequent infections. Recent studies indicate that colonization typically precedes infection, suggesting the effectiveness and necessity of preventing CR colonization as a primary method to lower infection risks.

Despite the vast amount of water on Earth, only a small percent is suitable for consumption, and these resources are diminishing. Moreover, water resources are unevenly distributed, leading to significant disparities in access to drinking water between countries and populations. Increasing consumption and the expanding human population necessitate the development of novel wastewater treatment technologies and the use of water treatment byproducts in other areas, such as fertilisers.

Mixed-metal nickel-iron, NiFe materials draw attention as affordable earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, nickel and mixed-metal nickel-iron metal-organic framework (MOF) composites with the carbon materials ketjenblack (KB) or carbon nanotubes (CNT) were synthesized in situ in a one-pot solvothermal reaction. As a direct comparison to these in situ synthesized composites, the neat MOFs were postsynthetically mixed by grinding with KB or CNT, to generate physical mixture composites.

Background and Clinical Features of a Unique and Mysterious Autoinflammatory Disease, Schnitzler Syndrome.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Immunology Division, Department of Internal Medicine and Hematology, Semmelweis University, 1088 Budapest, Hungary.

Schnitzler syndrome is a unique autoinflammatory disease, of which 747 cases have been described worldwide to date. The main features of the syndrome are a triad of recurrent urticaria, monoclonal IgM gammopathy, systemic inflammation associated with recurrent fever, joint and bone pain, and atypical bone remodeling (osteosclerosis). The abnormal activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome produces IL-1, which drives the disease pathology, but it also involves IL-6 and IL-18.

Growing epidemiological evidence suggests that the diverse and functional gut microbiota plays a vital role in regulating the health and disease of organisms including human. However, organisms are inevitably exposed to widespread environmental pollutants, and the interactions between their gut microbiota and pollutants are relatively underreported. The present paper considers heavy metals (HMs) and microplastics (MPs) as representatives of traditional and emerging pollutants and systematically summarizes their effects on gut microbiota and the effects of gut microbiota on pollutants.
