The biomechanical effect of mandibular functional flexure on stress build-up in implant-supported fixed restorations is discussed. The relative deformations and stress distributions in six different designs of implant-supported prosthetic systems (six or four implants, with or without distal cantilevers, cross-arch or midline-divided bar into two free-standing bridges) were analysed by a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of a human edentulous mandible. A significant amount of stress in the more distal implants and the superstructure at the symphysis arises as a consequence of mandible functional flexure. The analysis of the stress distributions generated by the different restorative patterns suggests that a division of the superstructure at the level of the symphysis significantly restores the natural functional flexure of the mandible.

Cage-like and ladder-like polysilsesquioxane, named EPOSS and ELPSQ, were synthesized and employed as precursors to develop a UV-curable membrane exhibiting remarkable hardness, superior flexibility, exceptional transparency and excellent friction resistance. Nanoindentation analysis demonstrates that the precise control of the Silicane molecular frameworks by adding a small quantity of EPOSS to ELPSQ can significantly enhance the hardness of the membranes. The resulting hardness value reaches a record 1.

Piezoresistive microcantilever sensors for the detection of viruses, pathogens, and trace chemical gasses, with appropriate measurement and signal processing methods, can be a powerful instrument with high speed and sensitivity, with in situ and real-time capabilities. This paper discusses a novel method for mass sensing on the order of a few femtograms, using a dual-microcantilever piezoresistive sensor with a vibrating common base. The two microcantilevers have controllably shifted natural frequencies with only one of them being active.
