AI Article Synopsis

  • The study examined how demographic and socioeconomic factors impact infection rates in adolescents in Switzerland over a 3-year period.
  • Among 196 adolescents aged 15-16, a 9.7% infection rate was found, with a significant disparity where 30% of foreign nationals tested positive compared to 7.3% of native adolescents.
  • The low overall infection rate among Swiss adolescents suggests a high standard of living, which seems to lessen the impact of socioeconomic factors on infection prevalence.

Article Abstract

Objective: This investigation sought to study the influence exerted by demographic and socioeconomic factors on the prevalence of infection in adolescents living in Switzerland.

Design: Epidemiological study spanning 3 years.

Methods: We included 196 15- to 16-year-old adolescents from a north-eastern Swiss city in our study, recruited by the school health service during a medical check-up in the years 1999, 2000 and 2001. infection was detected by ELISA using 2nd generation anti- IgG antibodies. Demographic and socioeconomic data were collected by questionnaire.

Results: infection was found in 19 of the 196 (9.7%) tested adolescents. tested positive in, respectively, 13 (7.3%) of the 176 natives and six (30%) of the 20 (P = 0.01 chi-squared) subjects from foreign countries. infection was significantly highly correlated with demographic factors but did not correlate with most of the socioeconomic factors.

Conclusion: The rate of infection among Swiss adolescents is one of the lowest in Europe. Nevertheless, an important disparity is evident between the rate of infection observed in the native population and that among immigrants. High living standards available to the majority of the population may explain the minor influence of socioeconomic factors on infection in our country.

(), a periodontal pathogen, has been implicated in the impairment of anti-tumor responses in colorectal cancer (CRC). The tumor microenvironment in CRC involves tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), which are pivotal in modulating tumor-associated immune responses. The polarization of TAMs towards an M2-like phenotype promotes CRC progression by suppressing the immune system.

Interferon gamma (IFNγ) is well-known for its ability to stimulate immune cells in response to pathogen infections and cancer. To develop an effective cancer therapeutic vaccine, CT26 colon carcinoma cells were genetically modified to express IFNγ either as a secreted form (sIFNγ) or as a membrane-bound form. For the membrane-bound expression, IFNγ was fused with Fas (mbIFNγ/Fas), incorporating the extracellular cysteine-rich domains, transmembrane, and cytoplasmic domains of Fas.

Introduction: Central nervous system (CNS) infection due to the varicella zoster virus (VZV) can complicate the primary infection or the reactivation, leading to significant mortality and morbidity. This study aimed to describe the clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics of patients with confirmed VZV CNS infection in a tertiary hospital in Greece.

Methods: Data about patients hospitalized from January 2018 to September 2023 with CNS infection by VZV, confirmed by a syndromic polymerase chain reaction in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), were retrospectively collected and evaluated.
