Background: Only recently pleural synovial sarcomas (SS) have been definitively identified because of the presence of a characteristic X;18 translocation. SS are sarcomatoid or biphasic malignancies morphologically almost indistinguishable from sarcomatoid or biphasic malignant mesotheliomas (MM).
Patient And Methods: We demonstrated a primary pleural biphasic SS in a patient referred to us has having a biphasic MM.
Results: Histology showed a spindle cell tumor with focal epithelioid differentiation, microcalcifications, and a hemangiopericytomatous vascular pattern. Ultrastructurally, the epithelioid tumor cells had few blunt microvilli and occasional intercellular junctions. Immunohistochemically the tumor cells were positive for BCL-2, CD99, CD56, and focally for BerEp4, Pancytokeratin and cytokeratin 5/6. These findings suggested the possibility of SS rather than MM. Detection of the t(X:18) translocation using RT-PCR, Southern blot, and DNA sequencing definitively confirmed the diagnosis of SS.
Conclusion: The differential between pleural SS and MM requires a high degree of suspicion and molecular analyses because morphology (histology, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy) is insufficient to definitively distinguish between these two malignancies. This differential is critical because patients with pleural SS can be susceptible to chemotherapy, and accordingly are treated, while patients with sarcomatoid MM are resistant to chemotherapy and accordingly are not treated.

Titanium (Ti)-based materials are favored for hard tissue applications, yet their bioinertness limits their success. This study hypothesizes that functionalizing Ti materials with chitosan nano/microspheres and calcitriol (VD) will enhance their bioactivity by improving cellular activities and mineralization. To test this, chitosan particles were applied uniformly onto Ti surfaces using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) at 20 V for 3 minutes.

Purpose: This work described a new species of Ceratomyxa, based on morphological and phylogenetic analyzes of myxospores collected from the gallbladder of the fish Astyanax mexicanus.
Methods: Sixty-two specimens were captured, between December 2022 and February 2024, in the Flexal River, in the community of Tessalônica, state of Amapá. The specimens were transported alive to the Laboratory of Morphophysiology and Animal Health, at the State University of Amapá, where the studies were carried out.

The Low Density Lipoprotein receptors (LDLRs) gene family includes 15 receptors: very low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR), LDLR, Sorting-related receptor with A-type repeats (SORLA), and 12 LDL receptor-related proteins (LRPs): LRP1, LRP1B, LRP2, LRP3, LRP4, LRP5, LRP6, LRP8, LRP10, LRP11, LRP12, LRP13. Most of these are involved in the transduction of key signals during embryonic development and in the regulation of cholesterol homeostasis. In oviparous animals, the VLDL receptor is also known as VTGR since it facilitates the uptake of vitellogenin in ovary.

Teravoxel-scale, cellular-resolution images of cleared rodent brains acquired with light-sheet fluorescence microscopy have transformed the way we study the brain. Realizing the potential of this technology requires computational pipelines that generalize across experimental protocols and map neuronal activity at the laminar and subpopulation-specific levels, beyond atlas-defined regions. Here, we present artficial intelligence-based cartography of ensembles (ACE), an end-to-end pipeline that employs three-dimensional deep learning segmentation models and advanced cluster-wise statistical algorithms, to enable unbiased mapping of local neuronal activity and connectivity.

Patients suffering epilepsy caused by the gain-of-function mutants of the hKCNT1 potassium channels are drug refractory. In this study, we cloned a novel human KCNT1B channel isoform using the brain cDNA library and conducted patch-clamp and molecular docking analyses to characterize the pharmacological properties of the hKCNT1B channel using thirteen drugs. Among cinchona alkaloids, we found that hydroquinine exerted the strongest blocking effect on the hKCNT1B channel, especially the F313L mutant.
