Phosphorus limitation of coastal ecosystem processes.

Primary production in coastal wetlands is conventionally thought to be limited by nitrogen. Although the plant community in a pristine salt marsh was found to be limited primarily by nitrogen availability, the bacterial community in the soil was limited by phosphorus. Hence, in coastal wetlands, and possibly in many ecosystems, individual trophic groups may respond differently to nitrogen and phosphorus loading. Phosphorus limitation of the growth of nitrogen-transforming bacteria will affect carbon fixation, storage, and release mediated by plants, a result that has important implications for ecosystem management.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), exacerbated by climate change and environmental disturbances, pose global challenges due to marine toxin contamination, particularly diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs). DSTs are prevalent marine toxins, and understanding their synthesis is vital for managing fisheries and mitigating environmental triggers. This study delves into the synthesis mechanisms of DSTs in Prorocentrum arenarium and Prorocentrum lima, which vary in toxin types and concentrations.

To date, III-V semiconductor-based tandem devices with GaInP top photoabsorbers show the highest solar-to-electricity or solar-to-fuel conversion efficiencies. In photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells, however, III-V semiconductors are sensitive, in terms of photochemical stability and, therefore, require suitable functional layers for electronic and chemical passivation. GaN films are discussed as promising options for this purpose.

Model P-chirogenic phosphonates derived from isopinocampheol, offering an excellent experimental system for studying chirality on the phosphorus chiral center, were studied using a set of chiroptical methods including ECD, VCD and ROA. Thanks to their rigidity, limiting the number of possible conformers, we successfully correlated the experimental UV-vis/ECD, IR/VCD and Raman/ROA results with DFT calculations. This allowed us to confidently assign the absolute configuration of our models, and our assignment is consistent with X-ray diffraction (XRD) data.

This study integrates partial denitrification/Anammox (PD/A) with hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystallization in a single reactor, achieving simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal along with phosphorus recovery. By adjusting pH, sludge concentration, low COD/TN ratio, and applying moderate dissolved oxygen stress, the system operated stably and promoted the synergistic growth of HAP and biomass. Results showed a nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 94.
