Addition of p-aminophenylalanine (4), an advanced biosynthetic precursor of the antibiotic chloramphenicol (5), to a Streptomyces venezuelae pabAB mutant (VS629) restored chloramphenicol production and led to formation of the non-chlorinated analogue corynecin II (6) and four acetanilide derivatives: p-(acetylamino)phenylalanine (7), p-(acetylamino)benzyl alcohol (13), p-(acetylamino)benzoic acid (14), and p-(acetylamino)phenol (acetaminophen, 16). Metabolite structures were deduced from NMR and MS-MS data and established by chromatographic and spectroscopic comparisons with authentic samples. Reference compound 13 was synthesized by reducing the acid chloride of 14. Shunt pathways are proposed to account for the formation of the metabolites from p-aminophenylalanine.

Dried urine spots have recently been proposed as an alternative matrix in the anti-doping field. Drying urine may open the opportunity to limit microbial and thermal degradation of the prohibited substances during transportation to the anti-doping laboratories without the need for refrigeration or freezing. In this study, a multi-targeted initial testing procedure was developed for the determination of 237 prohibited drugs/metabolites from 11 different classes in dried urine spots.

This study investigates how microbiome colonization influences the development of intestinal type 3 immunity in neonates. The results showed that reduced oxygen levels in the small intestine of neonatal rats induced by Saccharomyces boulardii accelerated microbiome colonization and type 3 immunity development, which protected against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium infection. Microbiome maturation increased the abundance of microbiome-encoded bile salt hydrolase (BSH) genes and hyocholic acid (HCA) levels.

Traditional Chinese medicine has unique advantages in preventing and treating COVID-19, and Fuzheng Jiedu decoction (FZJDD) was reported to be effective against COVID-19 in clinical trials. To investigate the potential mechanisms and material basis of FZJDD against SARS-CoV-2, we performed SARS-CoV-2 target protein inhibition analyses and a metabolite full spectrum analysis of FZJDD. Interestingly, FZJDD was found to block the binding of SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein with the receptor ACE2 and inhibit the activity of SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro.
