Sixteen secondary metabolites of the green alga Caulerpa prolifera have been isolated, and their chemical structures elucidated by analysis of their spectroscopic data. Two groups of metabolites have been established, with either a 1,2-dihydro- (2a-2i) or a 1,2,3,3'-tetrahydro-2,3-didehydro (3a-3f) caulerpenyne carbon backbone. The terminal vinyl acetoxy group of caulerpenyne was substituted by various fatty acid residues. The antifouling activity of the algal extract was tested in laboratory assays against two of the major groups of fouling organisms (bacteria, microalgae).

Pyrenoid-based CO-concentrating mechanisms (pCCMs) turbocharge photosynthesis by saturating CO around Rubisco. Hornworts are the only land plants with a pCCM. Owing to their closer relationship to crops, hornworts could offer greater translational potential than the green alga Chlamydomonas, the traditional model for studying pCCMs.

The widespread use of copper (Cu) in industrial and agricultural settings leads to the accumulation of excess Cu within aquatic ecosystems, posing a threat to organism health. Microalgal bioremediation has emerged as a popular and promising solution to mitigate the risks. Nevertheless, the genetic underpinnings and engineering tactics involved in heavy metal bioremediation by microalgae remain inadequately elucidated.

The green alga (formerly ) is a primary source of astaxanthin, a ketocarotenoid with high antioxidant activity and several industrial applications. Here, the highly repetitive genome was reconstructed by exploiting next-generation sequencing integrated with Hi-C scaffolding, obtaining a 151 Mb genome assembly in 32 scaffolds at a near-chromosome level with high continuity. Surprisingly, the distribution of the single-nucleotide-polymorphisms identified demonstrates a diploid configuration for the genome, further validated by Sanger sequencing of heterozygous regions.

Lichens are mutualistic associations consisting of a primary fungal host, and one to few primary phototrophic symbiont(s), usually a green alga and/or a cyanobacterium. They form complex thallus structures, which provide unique and stable habitats for many other microorganisms. Frequently isolated from lichens are the so-called black fungi, or black yeasts, which are mainly characterized by melanized cell walls and extremophilic lifestyles.

Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is a linear polymer of phosphate that plays various roles in cells, including in phosphate and metal homeostasis. Homologs of the vacuolar transporter chaperone 4 (VTC4), catalyzing polyP synthesis in many eukaryotes, are absent in red algae, which are among the earliest divergent plant lineages. We identified homologs of polyphosphate kinase 1 (PPK1), a conserved polyP synthase in bacteria, in 42 eukaryotic genomes, including 31 species detected in this study and 12 species of red algae.
