Published: February 2003

Zoosporic and conidial fungi species and environmental factors in 10 various sites of River Narew in the Narew National Park were studied. Samples of water were collected in autumn 1999 and spring 2000 for hydrochemical analysis and the order to determine the number of fungal species. Buckwheat-seeds, hemp-seeds, cellophane and snake exuviae were used as bait during the exposure in laboratory. 198 lower aquatic fungus species were found in various sites of River Narew. 13 species were recorded for the first time from Poland.

Effect of nature protection and management of grassland on biodiversity - Case from big flooded river valley (NE Poland).

Sci Total Environ

November 2023

Agriculturally used meadows are habitats whose biodiversity depends on anthropogenic disturbances such as fertilization or mowing. Intensified agricultural practices (too frequent mowing, use of mineral fertilizers and insecticides) lead to declines in the abundance and species diversity of the biota inhabiting them. The intensification of agricultural production in north-eastern Poland relates primarily to the increase in cattle numbers and the intensification of grassland management, but many areas were included in Natura 2000 network.

The progressive degradation of freshwater ecosystems worldwide requires action to be taken for their conservation. Nowadays, protection strategies need to step beyond the traditional approach of managing protected areas as they have to deal with the protection or recovery of natural flow regimes disrupted by the effects of future climate conditions. Climate change affects the hydrosphere at catchment scale altering hydrological processes which in turn impact hydrodynamics at the river reach scale.

Controls on anastomosis in lowland river systems: Towards process-based solutions to habitat conservation.

Sci Total Environ

December 2017

Department of Water Engineering, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS-SGGW), Nowoursynowska 159 Street, 02-776 Warszawa, Poland. Electronic address:

Anastomosing rivers were historically common around the world before extensive agricultural and industrial development in river valleys. Few lowland anastomosing rivers remain in temperate zones, and the protection of these river-floodplain systems is an international conservation priority. However, the mechanisms that drive the creation and maintenance of multiple channels, i.

The influence of hydrological conditions on phytoplankton community structure and cyanopeptide concentration in dammed lowland river.

Environ Monit Assess

August 2016

Department of Marine Biotechnology, University of Gdańsk, Al. Marszałka Piłsudskiego 46, 81-378, Gdynia, Poland.

Study results show continuous summer-autumn dominance of toxic cyanobacteria in plankton not only in the strongly eutrophicated lowland Siemianówka reservoir, but also along 130 km of Narew river below the lake. The negative effects of eutrophication of the reservoir reach far outside its boundaries. One of the symptoms of eutrophication was a mass development of cyanobacteria, including the toxin-producing Planktothrix agardhii.

Article Synopsis
  • Environmental flows are crucial for maintaining healthy river ecosystems, especially in valuable areas threatened by climate change.
  • The study focused on the Narew basin in northeastern Poland, using two hydrological models to evaluate changes in environmental flow due to projected climate scenarios.
  • Results showed that climate change poses a moderate risk to environmental flows, with varying impacts across different sites; the models can assist water management and conservation strategies.
