The reaction of (eta 5-C5Me5)TaMe4 with tert-butylphosphonic acid leads to the formation of a mixture of compounds: [[(eta 5-C5Me5)TaMe][t-BuP(O)(OH)][t-BuP(O)(OH)2]]2(t-BuPO3)2 (1) and [[(eta 5-C5Me5)Ta][t-BuP(O)(OH)2]]2(t-BuPO3)2(mu-O)2 (2). Compound 2 was also obtained by recrystallization of 1 from a THF/hexane mixture. Reaction of (eta 5-C5Me5)MCl4 (M = Mo, W) with PhP(O)(OH)2 yields the binuclear phosphonates [[(eta 5-C5Me5)M][PhP(O)(OH)2]]2(PhPO3)2(mu-O)2 (M = Mo (3); M = W (4)). Compounds 2.THF and 3(.)2.5THF were characterized by single-crystal X-ray studies. The tantalum and molybdenum phosphonates 2.THF and 3(.)2.5THF have different structures as compared to those of the previously reported titanophosphonate cages.

The chemical vapor deposition of refractory metal nitrides requires volatile precursors and has previously been achieved by using metal complexes containing a variety of imide ligands. Recently, the 1,4-di--butyl-1,3-diazabutadiene (DAD) adduct of bis(-butylimide)dichloridemolybdenum(VI) was shown to be an excellent precursor for the single-source CVD of MoN thin films. Leveraging the success of this work, we prepared chromium and tungsten compounds with the same framework.

The hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) process is used to synthesize diamond crystals on cemented carbide (WC-Co) SPUN inserts. Diamond (Dia.), carbon (GC-glassy spherical form), iridium (Ir), molybdenum (Mo), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), tungsten (W), and tantalum (Ta) powders were used as seeding materials for crystal growth.

More durable total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) are needed, due to the rising life expectancy, the higher activity levels of patients and the growing concerns about aseptic loosening being caused by metal hypersensitivity. In response, different hypoallergenic metal coatings have been developed for TKAs. However, possible adverse effects of these different metals (cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, zirconium, titanium and tantalum) have been neglected.

Bioactive glasses (BGs) have been a focus of research for over five decades for several biomedical applications. Although their use in bone substitution and bone tissue regeneration has gained important attention, recent developments have also seen the expansion of BG applications to the field of soft tissue engineering. Hard and soft tissue repair therapies can benefit from the biological activity of metallic ions released from BGs.

Refractory high-entropy alloy nanocomposites (HEA-NPs) are important class of materials with unique structure and potential applications. Although several synthetic methods have been reported, developing novel routes to prepare nanoscale HEA-based catalysts facilely is still urgently desired. This work takes advantage of confinement assisted arc and plasma shock (APS) to prepare a series of HEA-NPs by regulating the type and proportion of metal precursors.
