Malignant granular cell tumors (MGCTs) are rare neoplasms of uncertain histogenesis. We report a case of MGCT involving a peripheral nerve with peritoneal and omental dissemination in which cytogenetic findings are available. Our results show that MGCTs share some cytogenetic abnormalities with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), supporting the hypothesis that they may represent histogenetically related lesions.

Purpose: Implicit, unconscious biases in medicine are personal attitudes about race, ethnicity, gender, and other characteristics that may lead to discriminatory patterns of care. However, there is no consensus on whether implicit bias represents a true predictor of differential care given an absence of real-world studies. We conducted the first real-world pilot study of provider implicit bias by evaluating treatment parity in prostate cancer using unstructured data-the most common way providers document granular details of the patient encounter.

Background: Considering the significant participation of the microenvironment in the local aggressiveness of odontogenic keratocysts, this study aims to evaluate the expression of ADAMTS-1 and its substrates, versican, aggrecan and brevican in this locally invasive odontogenic cyst.

Methods: Immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were conducted on 30 cases of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and 20 dental follicles (DFs).

Results: The immunohistochemical expression of these proteins was predominantly cytoplasmic and granular across all samples.

Oncocytic Carcinoma Ex-Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Lacrimal Gland.

Adnexal Service, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London EC1V 2PD, United Kingdom.

Oncocytic carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of oncocytic cells, such cells being characterized by abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, invasive growth, and pronounced cellular pleomorphism. It may arise de novo, or through malignant transformation of a pre-existing benign oncocytoma. Oncocytic carcinoma most commonly occurs in the salivary glands, with rare involvement of the ocular adnexa where it mainly affects caruncle, conjunctiva, and lacrimal sac, and only very arises in the lacrimal gland.

Capicua transcriptional repressor (CIC)-rearranged sarcoma (CRS) is a rare and recently described tumor that most commonly affects patients between 15 and 30 years of age. It is an undifferentiated round cell malignancy, with a disease defining CIC fusion, with double homeobox 4 (DUX4) being the most common partner. Here, we report a 77-year-old woman who presented with a cutaneous thigh mass with a clinical morphology suggesting Merkel cell carcinoma.

Is endoscopic submucosal dissection safe in the management of early-stage colorectal cancers?

Am J Surg

December 2024

Department of Colorectal Surgery, Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, USA.

Background: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is increasingly being adopted for the treatment of early-stage colorectal cancer (CRC) lesions.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with early-stage CRC treated between 2015 and 2023, using ESD and colectomy databases, categorizing them into three groups: ESD only (n = 24), oncological colorectal resection (OCR) only (n = 90), and OCR after ESD (n = 59). We compared pathological and oncological outcomes among these groups.
