The reaction gammap-->pi(0)gamma'p has been measured with the TAPS calorimeter at the Mainz Microtron accelerator facility MAMI for energies between sqrt[s]=1221-1331 MeV. The cross section's differential in angle and energy have been determined for the photon gamma' in three bins of the excitation energy. This reaction channel provides access to the magnetic dipole moment of the Delta(+)(1232) resonance and, for the first time, a value of mu(Delta(+))=[2.7(+1.0)(-1.3)(stat)+/-1.5(syst)+/-3(theor)]mu(N) has been extracted.

Phagocytosis, an essential process for host defense, requires the coordination of a variety of signaling reactions. MT-II, an enzymatically inactive Lys49 phospholipase A (PLA) homolog, and MT-III, a catalytically-active Asp49 PLA, are known to activate phagocytosis in macrophages. In this study, the signaling pathways mediating phagocytosis, focusing on protein kinases, were investigated.

The current global pandemic of COVID-19 is characterized by waves of infection due to the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants carrying mutations on the Spike (S) protein gene. Since autumn 2020 many Variants of Concern (VOC) have been reported: Alpha/B.1.

Measurement of polarization observables , , and in and photoproduction off quasi-free nucleons.

October 2023

Helmholtz-Institut für Strahlen-und Kernphysik, University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany.

The target asymmetry , recoil asymmetry , and beam-target double polarization observable were determined in exclusive and photoproduction off quasi-free protons and, for the first time, off quasi-free neutrons. The experiment was performed at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn, Germany, with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector setup, using a linearly polarized photon beam and a transversely polarized deuterated butanol target. Effects from the Fermi motion of the nucleons within deuterium were removed by a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state invariant mass.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants with different infectivity, transmission potential, and morbidity change the characteristics of local epidemics and affect vaccine effectiveness. As part of the University of Southern California COVID-19 Pandemic Research Center's efforts to understand, control, and inform local community on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), we implemented a SARS-CoV-2 surveillance program among students, employees, and USC Keck Medical Center patients. We present the epidemiology and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants among the population.

Performing chemical functionalization on the surface of nanoparticles underlies their use in applications. Probing that a physicochemical transformation has indeed occurred on a nanoparticles' surface is rather difficult. For this reason, we propose that a macroscopic parameter, namely the surface energy γ, can monitor the physicochemical transformations taking place at the surface of nanoparticles.
