Nine transitions of dipole character have been identified linking an excited superdeformed (SD) band in 152Dy to the yrast SD band. As a result, the excitation energy of the lowest level in the excited SD band has been measured to be 14 238 keV. This corresponds to a 1.3 MeV excitation above the SD ground state. The levels in this band have tentatively been determined to be of negative parity and odd spin. The measured properties are consistent with an interpretation in terms of a rotational band built on a collective octupole vibration.

Here, we describe our pulsed helium droplet apparatus for spectroscopy of molecular ions. Our approach involves the doping of the droplets of about 10 nm in diameter with precursor molecules, such as ethylene, followed by electron impact ionization. Droplets containing ions are irradiated by the pulsed infrared laser beam.

A potential function is presented for describing a system of flexible HO molecules based on the single-center multipole expansion (SCME) of the electrostatic interaction. The model, referred to as SCME/f, includes the variation of the molecular quadrupole moment as well as the dipole moment with changes in bond length and angle so as to reproduce results of high-level electronic structure calculations. The multipole expansion also includes fixed octupole and hexadecapole moments, as well as anisotropic dipole-dipole, dipole-quadrupole, and quadrupole-quadrupole polarizability tensors.

There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable "pear" shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole (E3) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in ^{222,228}Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multistep Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN.

We demonstrate computation of total dynamic multipole polarizabilities using path-integral Monte Carlo method (PIMC). The PIMC approach enables accurate thermal and nonadiabatic mixing of electronic, rotational, and vibrational degrees of freedom. Therefore, we can study the thermal effects, or lack thereof, in the full multipole spectra of the chosen one- and two-electron systems: H, Ps, He, Ps, H, and HD.
