Published: November 2002

The cis-trans geometry of a nine-membered lactam significantly depends on the N-substituents; N-acyl-1-aza-2-cyclononanones (1a-c) exist as cis form; in contrast, N-Z- 1-aza-2-cyclononanone (1d) exists as trans form both in the crystal and in solution.

This study explores the liquid crystalline properties of novel amphiphilic β-cyclodextrin derivatives functionalized with seven oligoethylene glycol chains at the primary face, terminated with either an O-methyl or an O-cyanoethyl group, and fourteen hydrophobic aliphatic chains (elaidic or oleic acids) at the secondary face. These derivatives were designed to study the impact of chain conformation and terminal group polarity on their mesomorphic behavior. Thermal, microscopic, and X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the elaidic derivatives form columnar hexagonal mesophases, with the O-cyanoethyl derivative undergoing a slow, temperature-dependent transition to a bicontinuous cubic phase.

We report results of a theoretical study on photoinduced processes in 2-styrylpyridine. The geometries and the relative energies of the possible conformers were investigated using the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) and algebraic diagrammatic construction to second-order (ADC(2)) methods and the cc-pVTZ basis set. The complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) method is used for locating the minimum-energy conical intersection (MECI) geometries between the S and S states.

As a cutting-edge technique, fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) is vital for both biomedical research and clinical applications. However, its intravital imaging capacity has been restricted by the extremely limited brightness of NIR-II fluorophores. To address this challenge, we elucidated the inner mechanism of constructing high-performance NIR-II chromophores based on molecular isomer engineering from detailed computational investigations.

Iron-chelating siderophores such as aerobactin and petrobactin are produced by marine bacteria to sequester iron under low iron stress. Those that contain a citrate moiety undergo light-catalyzed ligand-to-metal charge transfer, inducing decarboxylation and formation of photoproducts. In this work, we employed density functional theory to obtain the optimized geometries and determine the relative energies and geometric parameters of different configurations of Fe(III)-coordinated aerobactin, petrobactin, and their photoproducts.
