Objective: In 1995, middle-aged Lithuanian men had a four-fold higher risk than Swedish men of dying from coronary heart disease. The cross-sectional LiVicordia study had reported significantly lower levels of the lipid-soluble antioxidants lycopene, beta-carotene, and gamma-tocopherol among Lithuanian men than among Swedish men. We examined whether there were differences in urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8OHdG), a marker of oxidative stress, between these groups of men.

Methods: Using automated coupled column high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection, we examined 50-y-old men randomly sampled from Linköping, Sweden (n = 99) and Vilnius, Lithuania (n = 109) with regard to urinary concentrations of 8-OHdG.

Results: Levels of 8-OHdG were higher in the Lithuanian men than in the Swedish men (20.9 +/- 0.91 versus 14.9 +/- 0.75 nM/L, P < 0.001), and this difference was evident in smokers (P < 0.01) and non-smokers (P < 0.001). Serum levels of alpha- and beta-carotene were inversely correlated to urinary 8-OHdG levels (P < 0.05 in both cases). Habitual smoking and low levels of beta-carotene contributed significantly to higher oxidative DNA damage expressed as urinary 8-OHdG.

Conclusions: These findings indicate that increased urinary 8-OHdG levels accompany lower serum levels of antioxidants in Lithuanian men. They supported previous suggestions that increased oxidative stress may be one factor behind the higher mortality in Lithuanian men.

Aortic pulse wave velocity predicts cardiovascular mortality among middle-aged metabolic syndrome subjects without overt cardiovascular disease.

Nutr Metab (Lond)

December 2024

Clinic of Cardiovascular Diseases, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Vilnius University, M. K. Čiurlionio str. 21, Vilnius, LT-03101, Lithuania.

Background: The objective of this cohort study was to assess the predictive value of main arterial markers for cardiovascular death in middle-aged subjects with metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Methods: This prospective longitudinal study analyzed data from 5829 metabolic syndrome subjects without overt cardiovascular disease aged between 40 and 64 years and enrolled in the Lithuanian High Cardiovascular Risk primary prevention program. Initial assessment comprised the evaluation of aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), carotid stiffness index, cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), ankle-brachial index (ABI), aortic augmentation index adjusted for a heart rate of 75 bpm (AIXHR75), and endothelium-dependent flow-mediated dilatation (FMD).

: Recent years have been marked by a search for new relationships between malocclusions and the morphological features of the cranial base and upper cervical spine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between skeletal orthodontic malocclusions and the morphological features of sella turcica bridging (STB) and ponticulus posticus (PP). : The study sample consisted of 300 randomly selected pre-orthodontic treatment patients aged 7-40 years.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) and mood states in patients with childhood-onset hypopituitarism and growth hormone deficiency as they stopped recombinant growth hormone therapy during the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
  • A total of 136 patients and 82 control individuals were assessed using the Profile of Mood States2 (POMS2) and the Quality of Life - Assessment of Growth Hormone Deficiency in Adults (QoL-AGHDA) questionnaires.
  • Results showed that while overall QoL was similar between the groups, patients experienced significantly higher levels of tension, depression, fatigue, and confusion compared to controls, with various factors such as cortisol levels, height, BMI, and age at therapy discontinuation correl

  • The study examined the effects of different stretching and exercise techniques on hamstring flexibility, stiffness, oxygen levels, and performance in young men with tight hamstrings.
  • Participants performed dynamic stretching with foam rolling, static stretching with foam rolling, static stretching only, and eccentric exercises in a crossover design, with assessments before, immediately after, and 30 minutes post-exercise.
  • Results showed significant increases in hamstring flexibility and changes in muscle stiffness and torque across all conditions, offering practical insights for improving range of motion in individuals with hamstring tightness.

  • Alcohol-related deaths in Lithuania decreased by nearly one-third over the past decade but have increased since 2019, with a study analyzing 1,200 autopsies from 2018 to 2022 uncovering rising trends.
  • The main causes of death identified were diseases (54.17%), accidents (31.25%), suicides (12.08%), and homicides (2.5%), with toxicology tests finding a significant link between higher blood alcohol concentrations and victims of accidents.
  • The research highlights the role of alcohol intoxication in fatalities, emphasizing its impact on deaths from accidents and homicides, while also revealing differences in intoxication levels between genders.
