Reactions of [Mg(thffo)(2)] (1) or [Ca(thffo)(2)] (2) with ZrCl(4) or HfCl(4) in a CH(2)Cl(2)/THF/CH(3)CN mixture give thermally stable neutral heterobimetallic tetranuclear complexes [M(3)M'(mu(x)-O)(mu,eta(2)-thffo)(6)(Cl)(6)] (thffo=tetrahydrofurfuroxide; M/M'/x: 3, Zr/Mg/3; 4, Hf/Mg/3; 5, Zr/Ca/4; 6, Hf/Ca/4) as colorless crystals in 75-82 % yield. X-ray diffraction studies show complexes 3-5 to contain oxo-bridged M(3) triangles that are capped by an alkaline earth metal-containing moiety to form species of C(3) symmetry. Reactions of ZrCl(4) and HfCl(4) with pure tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in EtOH and MeOH provide ionic complexes [M(3)(mu(3)-O)(mu,eta(2)-thffo)(3)(L)(3)(Cl)(6)]Cl (M/L: 8, Zr/EtOH; 9, Hf/EtOH; 10, Zr/MeOH) in 66-79 % yield. Complexes 8-10 consist of M(3) triangles that are analogous to those in 3-6 and possess similar overall symmetry, as shown by X-ray crystallography. Changes in the reaction conditions afforded the asymmetric neutral dimer [Zr(2)(mu-thffo)(2)(thffoH)(Cl)(6)] (7) and the homometallic [Zr(3)(mu(3)-O)(mu,eta(2)-thp)(3)(thf)(2)(Cl)(7)] (11).

Zerovalent scandium, zirconium, hafnium, and manganese nanoparticles are prepared by reduction of ScCl, ZrCl, HfCl, and MnCl with lithium or sodium naphthalenide in a one-pot, liquid-phase synthesis. Small-sized monocrystalline nanoparticles are obtained with diameters of 2.4 ± 0.

As a result of our study on the interaction between the octahydrotriborate anion with nucleophiles (Nu = THF, PhP, PhP-(CH)-PPh (dppe), PhAs, EtN, PhNH, CHN, CHCN, PhCHCN)) in the presence of a wide range of Lewis acids (Ti(IV), Hf(IV), Zr(IV), Al, Cu(I), Zn, Mn(II), Co(II) halides and iodine), a number of substituted derivatives of the octahydrotriborate anion [BHNu] are obtained. It is found that the use of TiCl, AlCl, ZrCl, HfCl, CuCl and iodine leads to the highest product yields. In this case, it is most likely that the reaction proceeds through the formation of an intermediate [BH-HMXn], which was detected by NMR spectroscopy.

Molecular layer deposition of photoactive metal-naphthalene hybrid thin films.

Dalton Trans

September 2021

Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology, Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, 0315 Oslo, Norway.

We here report on photoactive organic-inorganic hybrid thin films prepared by the molecular layer deposition (MLD) method. The new series of hybrid films deposited using 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (2,6-NDC) and either hafnium chloride (HfCl), yttrium tetramethylheptanedionate (Y(thd)) or titanium chloride (TiCl) were compared with the known zirconium chloride (ZrCl) based system. All metal-naphthalene films are amorphous as-deposited and show self-saturating growth as expected for an ideal MLD process with varied growth rates depending on the choice of metal precursor.

Composition-defined nanosized assemblies that contain heterometallic early 4d/5d-transition-metals.

Dalton Trans

October 2019

Laboratory for Chemistry and Life Science Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Yokohama 226-8503, Japan.

The controlled assembly of early transition metals remains a challenging research target, especially with respect to the generation of heterometallic molecules and nanomaterials. In this study, metal chlorides of the early 4d/5d-transition-metals, i.e.

A Tunable Trifluoromethyliodonium Reagent.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

June 2019

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 2, 8093, Zurich, Switzerland.

Four complexes of MCl (M=Ti, Zr, Hf) with the hypervalent trifluoromethyl iodine reagent trifluoromethyl-1,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-1,2-benziodoxole (1,=L) are described. With TiCl , an I-O bond cleavage occurs, leading to the formation of the trifluoromethyliodonium alcoholate complexes [Ti Cl (L) ]Cl (2 a) and Ti Cl (L) (2 b). Reactions with ZrCl and HfCl form the complexes ZrCl (L) (3) and HfCl (L) (4), respectively, wherein the original I-O bond is retained and elongated compared to that in free 1.
