Aims: The purpose of this research was to investigate to what extent the most commonly identified non-native features in the L1 speech of late consecutive bilinguals are reflected in differences in the bilinguals' productions of these features compared with those of monolingual speakers of the L1.

Design: We investigated the L1 accent of English migrants to Austria and monolingual English speakers in the United Kingdom in two inter-related studies.

Data: In Study 1, an accent-perception experiment, native English listeners rated the nativeness of the monolinguals' and bilinguals' L1 English productions of read sentences, using a 6-point scale, and subsequently commented on the accentual features associated with perceived non-nativeness.

"Minimal-Advice" on Salt Intake: Results of a Multicentre Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial on Hypertensive Patients.

High Blood Press Cardiovasc Prev

January 2025

Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, ESH Excellence Center of Hypertension, "Federico II" University of Naples Medical School, Via S. Pansini, 5, 80131, Naples, Italy.

Introduction: A strong and well-known association exists between salt consumption, potassium intake, and cardiovascular diseases. MINISAL-SIIA results showed high salt and low potassium consumption in Italian hypertensive patients. In addition, a recent Italian survey showed that the degree of knowledge and behaviour about salt was directly interrelated, suggesting a key role of the educational approach.

Sources of Microstructure in Mammalian Cochlear Responses.

J Assoc Res Otolaryngol

January 2025

Caruso Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Quasiperiodic fluctuations with frequency are observed in a variety of responses that either originate from or strongly depend on the cochlea's active mechanics. These spectral microstructures are unique and stable features of individual ears and have been most thoroughly studied in behavioral hearing thresholds and otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). While the exact morphology of the microstructure patterns may differ across measurement types, the patterns are interrelated and are thought to depend on common mechanisms.

The epigenetic state of chromatin, gene activity and chromosomal positions are interrelated in plants. In Arabidopsis thaliana, chromosome arms are DNA-hypomethylated and enriched with the euchromatin-specific histone mark H3K4me3, while pericentromeric regions are DNA-hypermethylated and enriched with the heterochromatin-specific mark H3K9me2. We aimed to investigate how the chromosomal location affects epigenetic stability and gene expression by chromosome engineering.

Introduction: Mitochondria and angiogenesis play key roles in multiple myeloma (MM) development, but their interrelated genes affecting MM prognosis are under-studied.

Methods: We analyzed TCGA_MMRF and GSE4581 datasets to identify four genes - CCNB1, CDC25C, HSP90AA1, and PARP1 - that significantly correlate with MM prognosis, with high expression indicating poor outcomes.

Results: A prognostic signature based on these genes stratified patients into high- and low-risk groups, with the latter showing better survival.
