We present a simple and inexpensive method for measuring weak cohesive interactions. This technique is applied to the specific case of oil droplets with a depletion interaction, dispersed in an aqueous solution. The experimental setup involves creating a short string of droplets while immobilizing a single droplet.

Brainstem atrophy, particularly in the locus coeruleus, has also been linked with poorer executive function. Studies showing brainstem as one of the first regions affected by AD largely employed novel imaging techniques such as neuromelanin-sensitive MRI, which is limited to research environments.

Background: As an extension of the central nervous system (CNS), the retina shares many similarities with the brain and can manifest signs of various neurological diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study investigates the spectral features of the retina to develop a classification model for the differentiation of individuals with elevated brain amyloid levels.
Method: Participants (n=66) with varying brain Aβ levels, as determined by brain imaging, were non-invasively imaged using a hyperspectral retinal camera at wavelengths of 450 to 905 nm.

The biomethanization of lignocellulosic wastes remains an inefficient and complex process due to lignin structures that hinder the hydrolysis step, therefore, some treatments are required. This work describes the addition of an enriched microbial consortium in the biomethanization of rice straw. The experiment was carried out in lab batch reactors following two strategies: (i) pretreatment of rice straw for 48 h using the enriched microbial consortium (dilution 1:100), and (ii) addition of this enriched microbial consortium (dilution 1:100) directly to the anaerobic reactors (bioaugmentation).

Background: Clinical trials for assessing the effects of infection prevention and control (IPC) interventions are expensive and have shown mixed results. Mathematical models can be relatively inexpensive tools for evaluating the potential of interventions. However, capturing nuances between institutions and in patient populations have adversely affected the power of computational models of nosocomial transmission.
