From the diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) activity-guided fractionation, a new quinolone alkaloid, 1-methyl-2-tetradecyl-4(1H)-quinolone (1) was isolated from the fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa together with three known quinolone alkaloids, evocarpine (2), 1-methyl-2-[(4 Z,7 Z)-4,7-decadienyl]-4(1H)-quinolone (3) and 1-methyl-2-[(6 Z,9 Z)-6,9-pentadecadienyl]-4(1 H)-quinolone (4). They showed a dose-dependent DGAT inhibition with IC 50 values of 69.5 microM ( 1), 23.8 microM (2), 20.1 microM (3) and 13.5 mu (4).

, a genus within the Malvaceae family, is abundantly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. Many species of this genus are widely utilized in various ways, including chewing, in folk medicine, acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, and treating gastrointestinal disorders, rheumatism, and asthma, among other conditions. These applications are largely due to their secondary metabolites, primarily quinolone alkaloids and cyclopeptides.

Metabolic blockade-based genome mining of the marine sediment-derived SCSIO 07745 led to the discovery of 11 novel aminoquinolinone alkaloids, oxazoquinolinones A-J (-), characterized by an oxazolidone[3,2-α]quinoline-5,8-dione scaffold, and oxazoquinolinone K (), featuring an unprecedented fused 6/6/6/5 tetracyclic core ring system. Additionally, 5 new biosynthetic intermediates or shunt products (-) and a known metabolite sannanine () were identified. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses and a comparison of electronic circular dichroism and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Electronic address:

The exposure risk of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes increases the incidence of resistant bacterial infections, has resulted in clinical treatment failures with ciprofloxacin, necessitating urgent implementation of novel strategies for controlling this situation. Matrine serves as the principal constituent of the traditional Chinese herb Sophora flavescens Ait. and exhibits pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-tumor, and hepatoprotective effects.

Endophytic bacteria in pedicels: isolation, screening and analysis of antagonistic activity against nectar yeasts.

Front Microbiol

October 2024

Yunnan Provincial Engineering and Research Center for Sustainable Utilization of Honey Bee Resources, Eastern Bee Research Institute, College of Animal Science and Technology, Yunnan Agricultural University, Kunming, China.

, an ancient plant species endemic to Yunnan Province, China, remains underexplored in terms of its endophytic bacterial communities. The plant tissue pedicel serves as the connection between the flower and the stem, not only delivers nutrients but also transmits metabolic substances from endophytic bacteria to the nectar during long-term microbial colonization and probably improves the antagonistic activity of nectar against yeast. Hence, 138 isolates of endophytic bacteria have been isolated in this study from the pedicels of 12- and 60-year-old .
