The distribution of anaesthesia-related staff in Europe is characterized by a wide disparity between countries--and also within countries, between the rural regions and between large and small cities. The density of anaesthesiologists varies in different European areas--for example, 4.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in Ireland compared to 15.6 in Italy; conversely, trainee anaesthesiologists are more numerous in those countries in which the number of qualified specialists is low. These large differences may be explained by factors such as the management of training and assessment, the existence (or otherwise) of nurses, and the workload; mainly in Eastern European countries, the factors include economic conditions and health care policies. Most important are (i) the regulation of entrants into the specialty, and (ii) the range of the anaesthesiologist's duties--including (as well as anaesthesia) intensive care, emergency medicine and pain management. Important modifications could come from an increase in the workload, a decrease in the working time, and perhaps from the development of migratory flows when Eastern European countries join the European Union. The evolution of anaesthesiology in the future will depend on many unknown events: progress in pharmacology and techniques, the development of day-case anaesthesia, the behaviour of new consumers and, above all, future health policies.

Objective: Recently, several non-conventional variants of IBD-associated dysplasia have been described; however, their prevalence in Central-Eastern Europe is unknown. We aimed to perform a retrospective pilot study by re-evaluating several IBD-associated adenocarcinoma cases to survey the incidence of adjacent non-conventional dysplasia and validate that recent North American findings may apply to a European population.
Methods: Retrospectively, 28 randomly chosen cases of IBD-associated adenocarcinomas diagnosed between 2010 and 2022 were re-evaluated.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the causal relationships between sleep-associated traits and hearing difficulties in noise (HDinN) by Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.
Design: Single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with chronotype, insomnia, sleep duration, daytime dozing or sleeping, and ease of getting up in the morning were extracted from European population genome-wide association study pooled data for bidirectional MR analysis. The MR-Egger regression, the inverse variance weighted technique, and the weighted median method were used for data analysis.

Muscle mass has been traditionally assessed by measuring paraspinal muscle areas at the level of the third lumbar vertebra on computed tomography (CT). Neurological or neurosurgical patients seldom undergo CT scans of the lumbar region. Instead, temporal muscle thickness (TMT), cross-sectional area (TMA) and radiodensity measured from head CT scans are readily available measures of muscle mass and quality in these patient cohorts.

This study aimed to develop exposure-response relationships (ERRs) between road, rail, and air traffic noise and high noise annoyance (HNA) and to assess the HNA disease burden. In 2023, 4 640 adults were cross-sectionally sampled from the five largest cities in Bulgaria. Participants' road, rail/tram, and air traffic HNA was defined as the top two categories (60% cut-off point) of a 5-point scale.

Species-rich grasslands of temperate Europe are threatened by the spread and increasing dominance of the rhizomatous grass Calamagrostis epigejos. Native hemiparasitic Rhinanthus species have been proposed as biocontrol to suppress C. epigejos, but experimental evidence is limited.
