While the existence of the trough effect is unquestioned, its theoretical significance is unknown. A multifaceted instrumental approach - spectrographic, cineradiographic, and vocal tract modeling - was used to document the trough effect in open (V.CV) and closed (VC.V) syllable forms using a symmetrical vowel context surrounding labial stops. Collectively, the results document the trough phenomenon as a momentary deactivation of tongue and/or lip movement after V1 and continuing into the stop closure. This empirical event suggests a segment-by-segment activation pattern as opposed to a diphthongal vowel-to-vowel trajectory with an independent and superimposed consonantal gesture. Quantitative models of VCV coarticulation must incorporate the trough effect in order to more effectively capture the kinematic properties of speech.

Effective management of brucellosis in human populations is closely tied to controlling the disease in domestic livestock. This study focused on identifying determinants of brucellosis prevalence in mixed industrial dairy and beef cattle farms within Isfahan Province, Iran. Employing a case control design, we compared 32 ranches with documented brucellosis within the previous year (12 months) to 38 farms with no brucellosis during the same timeframe.

Sex differences in the pharmacokinetics of anticancer drugs: a systematic review.

ESMO Open

December 2024

Department of Pharmacology, Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights that body weight and sex can significantly impact how anticancer drugs are processed in the body, yet the extent of these differences remains unclear.
  • A systematic review of 112 studies identified significant pharmacokinetic (PK) differences for 14 out of 99 examined anticancer agents, although no studies currently assess how these differences impact drug efficacy or safety.
  • The findings suggest that developing sex-specific dosing strategies for anticancer drugs could improve their risk-benefit ratio for patients.

Introduction: In kidney transplant (KT) recipients diabetes mellitus (DM) are associated with an increased mortality and a poorer graft survival. Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA) have demonstrated cardiovascular and renal benefits in the general population. However, there is lacking evidence in KT recipients.

A retrospective analysis of tacrolimus pharmacokinetic in Saudi paediatric patients in early post-liver transplantation period.

Pediatr Neonatol

November 2024

Pharmaceutical Care Department, King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; College of Pharmacy, King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Science, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; King Abdullah International Medical Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Tacrolimus is an essential immunosuppressive medication in paediatric patients' post-liver transplantation. Achieving tacrolimus target concentration in early post-transplantation is crucial to minimise the risk of acute rejection; however, this is challenging due to inter- and intra-patient variability in tacrolimus metabolism and clearance. Therefore, our study aims to describe tacrolimus trough concentration variability and pharmacokinetics in paediatric post-liver transplantation during the first two weeks post-transplantation.
