We report the pharmacological findings on levofolinate after the intraperitoneal administration of leucovorin-5-FU. Levofolinate 300 mg/saline 500 ml and 5-FU 750 mg/saline 500 ml were administered intraperitoneally over 1.5 h. The plasma and intraperitoneal concentrations of levofolinate at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 22(20) h after the administration were evaluated at 6 points with HPLC analysis. The intraperitoneal levofolinate concentration went up as high as 100 micrograms/ml and remained above 10 micrograms/ml over 8 hours. This suggested that intraperitoneal administration elevated the portal vein and abdominal lymphatic levofolinate levels. Intraperitoneal levofolinate-5-FU is a promising protocol for gastro-intestinal cancers.

In a rat model, following exposure to rat folate receptor alpha antibodies (FRαAb) during gestation, FRαAb accumulates in the placenta and the fetus and blocks folate transport to the fetal brain and produces behavioral deficits in the offspring. These deficits could be prevented with folinic acid. Therefore, we sought to evaluate folate transport to the brain in young rat pups and determine what effect FRαAb has on this process, to better understand the folate receptor autoimmune disorder associated with cerebral folate deficiency (CFD) in autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Background/aim: Diabetic patients are at a higher risk of carcinogenesis and death from cancer, including colorectal cancer, than healthy individuals. The efficacy of cancer chemotherapy in the diabetic condition remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of anticancer agents oxaliplatin and fluorouracil in streptozotocin (STZ)-treated hyperglycemic mice.

Dept. of Gastroenterology, Gastroenterology Center, Cancer Institute Ariake Hospital, Japanese Foundation of Cancer Research.

The prognosis of unresectable or metastatic gastric cancer is poor. One of the reasons for this is peritoneal dissemination, which is often observed in gastric cancer. Here, we discuss some new therapeutic strategies, especially chemotherapeutic strategies, for peritoneal dissemination of gastric cancer.
