Background: Early neurological deterioration (END) is associated with a poor prognosis in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Effectively lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) can improve the stability of atherosclerotic plaque and reduce post-stroke inflammation, which may be an effective means to lower the incidence of END. The objective of this study was to determine the preventive effects of evolocumab on END in patients with non-cardiogenic AIS.

Delayed atorvastatin delivery promotes recovery after experimental spinal cord injury.

Neurotherapeutics

January 2025

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Rochester, MN 55905, USA; Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA; Center for Multiple Sclerosis and Autoimmune Neurology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. Electronic address:

Spinal cord injury (SCI) significantly alters gene expression, potentially impeding functional recovery. This study investigated the effects of atorvastatin, a widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering drug, on gene expression and functional recovery in a chronic murine SCI model. Female C57BL/6J mice underwent moderate 0.

LDL-cholesterol lowering agents (statins and PCSK9 inhibitors) and the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage: A network meta-analysis.

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Chongqing University Three Gorges Hospital, Wanzhou, Chongqing 400016, China; School of Medicine, Chongqing University, Chongqing 404010, China. Electronic address:

Background And Purpose: Statin therapy reduces the risk of ischemic stroke; however, certain studies have observed an increased incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Moreover, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9(PCSK-9) inhibitors have emerged as a powerful class of lipid-lowering medications, potentially with a lower propensity for causing hemorrhagic events. To investigate this matter further, we conducted a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving statins and PCSK-9 inhibitors that reported occurrences of ICH.

Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia Treatment: New Developments.

Curr Atheroscler Rep

January 2025

Carbohydrate and Lipid Metabolism Research Unit, Department of Medicine, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Purpose Of Review: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH) is characterized by marked elevation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) and premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This is a review of novel pharmacological therapies to lower LDLC in patients with HoFH.

Recent Findings: Novel therapies can be broadly divided by whether their efficacy is dependent or independent of residual low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) function.

Baolier Capsule's Secret Weapon: Piperine Boosts Cholesterol Excretion to Combat Atherosclerosis.

Drug Des Devel Ther

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University, Southern Medical University, Foshan, 528244, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: The Baolier capsule (BLEC) is a proprietary Mongolian medicine administered for treating hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis (AS). However, the therapeutic effects, primary bioactive ingredients, and potential mechanisms underlying hypercholesterolemia and AS remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the pharmacological effects, principal active ingredients, and mechanisms of BLEC against hypercholesterolemia and AS.
