Exploring developmental changes in femoral midneck cross-sectional properties.

Anat Rec (Hoboken)

December 2024

Laboratorio de Evolución Humana, Universidad de Burgos, Edificio I+D+i/CIBA, Burgos, Spain.

This research delves deeper into previous works on femoral cross-sectional properties during ontogeny by focusing for the first time on the human femoral midneck. The ontogenetic pattern of cross-sectional properties at femoral midneck is established and compared with those at three different femoral locations: the proximal femur, the midshaft, and the distal femur. The study sample includes 99 femora (70 non-adults and 29 adults) belonging to archaeological specimens.

Objectives: Skeletal indicators of developmental stress are commonly used to assess health, disease, and patterns of morbidity and mortality in past populations. Incorporating information about individual life history, such as adverse life events, allows for a more thorough understanding of their etiology. This paper adopts the double lens of ontogeny and the life course to analyze indicators of developmental stress in relation to known individual pathologies and developmental patterns of the cranium, vertebrae, and long bones.

Tolerance to insect herbivory increases with progressing plant development.

Plant Biol (Stuttg)

December 2024

Laboratory of Entomology, Plant Sciences, Wageningen University and Research, Wageningen, The Netherlands.

Plants can sustain various degrees of damage or compensate for tissue loss by regrowth without significant fitness costs. This tolerance to insect herbivory depends on the plant's developmental stage during which the damage is inflicted and on how much tissue is removed. Plant fitness correlates, that is, biomass and germination of seeds, were determined at different ontogenetic stages, vegetative, budding, or flowering stages of three annual brassicaceous species exposed to feeding by Pieris brassicae caterpillars at different intensities.

, the earliest known ceratopsian, is represented by dozens of specimens of different sizes collected from the Upper Jurassic of the Junggar Basin, northwestern China. Here, we present the first comprehensive study on the bone histology of based on ten specimens varying in size. Four ontogenetic stages are recognized: early juvenile, late juvenile, subadult, and adult.

During the Late Permian, saber-toothed gorgonopsian therapsids were the dominant terrestrial predators, playing crucial roles as apex predators alongside therocephalian therapsids within Permian terrestrial ecosystems. The entire gorgonopsian clade went extinct during the Permo-Triassic mass extinction, leaving other therapsids to continue into the Triassic. Gorgonopsians have not been well studied, particularly in terms of their growth patterns, with only a few genera having undergone osteohistological analysis.
